I don't know about there, but here there are businesses that will drive to wherever you're parked and install a new windshield for you just for the price of the windshield. And in Florida, you can get a free windshield if you have full-coverage because the state will reimburse the insurance company (not that that bit of info helps you out any).
Other than that, yes, there is a special tool. It's sort of a cutter for the urethane - slash - prybar for the moulding and glass. The glue is a black urethane made just for doing windshields. I've never done it myself, but I've watched a couple times, and it looks basically like you remove the moulding (pulls out?) cut the old glue, lift out the windshield, clean out the rest of the glue, put down a bead of new glue, set the windshield in place, little more glue, replace molding, let dry, add a little salt and pepper to taste, serves 40.

I plan on replacing my front windshield also. Not because it's broken, just due to the fact it has 12+ years of pits imbedded in the glass. I also thought about doing it myself, but decided against it. You really need to know what you're doing to do it properly. Usually, the price of the glass INCLUDES the cost of installation. So, if you do it yourself, you will still be paying for the installation because it's built in to the price of the glass.
I remember watching a news story on T.V. awhile ago on this very subject. I think it was on 20/20 or Dateline. I guess there was/still a problem about certain glass places installing front windshields on cars improperly. The improper installations were causing the front windshields to SEPARATE during minor traffic accidents.
A few months back, while I was at the local junkyard, I decided to test the theory on improper installations from "cut-rate" glass installers. I went to a few cars that had replacement, non-original (LOF) brand, front windshields on them. Sure enough, most of the cars with "replacement" front glass could be separated from the body channel if it was pushed hard from the inside.
IMO, it's better to be safe and have a professional automotive glass installer do the job instead.

Get comprehensive on your insurance and get a friggin glass comany to do it. I got mine done yesterday and it was FREE!!! It is extremely vital if you want to live in a crash!! The windshield is what has a lot of the strength especially if you have t tops. For the extra couple bucks in insurance it is worth.

I agree with purpleworm, then wait about 1 month and throw a rock at it and then make the Claim.

Check out this link; go to the bottom, and click on "Windshield". That'll give you an idea of how it's done! I agree though; looks damn tricky to do.

Good choice, especially for the cost. I had a new windshield installed in my SC last October; total cost - including windshield - was just over $200 Cdn.
