Door skin peeling off, possible fix?

as you can see, the skin on my driver's door is peeling away on the top left corner just in front of the side mirror, when i open the door it gets caught on the fender and peels back. I tried welding it in place once and it held decently enough, so i went a head and threw some bondo on it and called it good, well it caught again and popped my welds, i tried welding once more and i just burned through, its far too thing to weld now. anyone have any ideas to fix this?

should i just cut it off and maybe fix it with some mesh and fiberglass?...would that even work? I need to get this fixed ASAP....It already snowed here yesterday and I can't afford to have a hole like that and let snow in all winter.

If pics would help, ill get some up for you, just ask.

Re: Door skin peeling off, possible fix?

the only way to properly fix it is to take the door off the body. But it shouldnt be much more to just find a door from a donor car then you wouldnt hafta worry bout the bondo cracking up and falling out in 6 months time. I know around here you can find doors all day for 25- 50 beans. Hell u might get lucky and even find one the correct color.
While you are in the midst of fixing it either way, it would be a good time to fix the reason its catching on the body. Could be the fender out of alignment, door pins and bushings, striker bolt.

Re: Door skin peeling off, possible fix?

I realized i could just get a new door and toss it on there, but i can't find any near where I'm from. I was just wondering if anybody has come across this problem and possibly fixed it somehow. or if they had any decent ideas...trust me, if i could find another door i would gladly do so...i don't want to spent 100+ for one however.

i wasnt trying to bust your stones by saying put another door on it was just 1 option. I have seen new door skins put on and repaired. But the only way to do it right is to remove the door and properly repair. Even then you need to fix the sagging issue or why its catching on the fender in the first place. Or else you will wind up doing it all over again for the 3rd time.

Re: Door skin peeling off, possible fix?

well, the door was already a donor door. my 89 was stolen and wrecked so i've been slowly fixing it as i go. the current door already had a split in it and its just gotten progressively worse. Id rather not go through the process of swapping doors again, its not exactly the easiest one man project, lol

i do appreciate the response, however. not many people have replied to my other problems lol

Re: Door skin peeling off, possible fix?

i feel your pain man. i am in the midst of putting back together an 89 iroc myself that i have had in about 10000 pieces since 2009. doin it by yourself can be a hassle at times on certain things but in the end its worth it at least to me.
If the skin is to thin to weld to, there are good epoxy materials out there that might or should do the trick. we use it on race cars for things and it holds up to 300 mile races every week without busting loose. Mainly for gluing stuff like aluminum wafer material to the quarters, sides and under the hood to make it stronger and not flex at 180mph.
Do you know what is causing it to sag and drag on the fender?

Re: Door skin peeling off, possible fix?

i think its just the fact that its loose, if i push the skin flush agains the door where is should be, it won't touch the fender at all. and i think the reason it caught after i fixed it the first time was because my bondo might have been a little too thick and it must have caught on that. as to what originally caused it? i have no clue, it was like that when i got it.

so, maybe if i can get it tack in place at least...i could use some JB Weld or something like that to fill in the rest of it? its all the way up in the corner, and if i could just weld it from the inside of the door i would, but i can't reach it with my MIG. I'm hoping to get to fixing it this weekend.

thanks, I'm pretty happy too!
no, when i put the new hood, fenders and nose piece on i spent a few hours making sure i had them right where they should be. the driver's door where the split skin is however, was already like that on the donor car..i had to use it since my door was so smashed you couldn't even tell it was a door anymore. since the skin was peeled back a little it catches on the fender and I'm not sure what the best way i can go about fixing it is...if you have any ideas i would GREATLY appreciate them. and like i said earlier, ill try and get a picture up tomorrow to show you what I'm up against.
