So I just got my 91 Z28 repainted after wanting to do it since I bought it. I put a new fender on that was grey and fading and the roof had been sprayed with a rattlecan and was cracked all over. There were a few dents that I got fixed also. I went with a single stage black with no clear as I plan on selling it soon when I get a few other things fixed. I paid $450 to get it sprayed but the bodywork on the roof and other things cost quite a bit, my total coming out to $1075. I am very happy with how it turned out. Here's some pics:

That looks great. I know your gonna sell it, but I would suggest taking out the taillights and polishing them. I had my car painted at Maaco last fall and love how it turned out. My taillights looked very similar to yours, very dull. I used the turtle wax headlight polishing kit ($10) and polished them. Then I put about 5 coats of duplicolor clear on them and they look like new. Will really make your car look great

 

Yeah that's one of the things I was planning on doing. It needs front suspension work because it's all pretty loose up there and also has a bad head gasket.

Nice paint job for a good price. I'm looking for a paint job for my TA and don't want to spend a arm and leg. I'm looking to spend around $1000. When the weather gets nice I have to drive it around to places and get some Quotes. Cheers Bro...

 

How long did they take to paint your car? I have been thinking about them or One Day.

 

I was able to get the guy down on the price to spray it but body work was a set hourly price. He started at $550 and I told him I know a shop farther away that said they will do it for $350 and didn't want to drive that far. We met at $450 and I was happy. Just remember that it's just single stage black, there is no clear coat, that will surely cost a bit more.

I left it with them for a week but told them it was low priority because I have my other car to drive.

Hi Bro! I have a place in town that has a sign up that says $699 paint job. I'm going to drop by with the car when this shitty snow goes away. Can't wait to get my TA out for a rip. :-) Will check out Maaco in town also. Cheers..

That looks like a great job and for the price. Get a new set of front parking lights and respray the black insert in the nosecone and your front end will look like brand new.

 

Looks great-almost makes me want to keep my RS gloss black. BTW my 2013 Wrangler Sport S is the same color as you Dart.

 

I've been going back and forth on the Maaco job for my 84 TA, (maybe the GTA if I have it after a couple years) the 84 would need to be stripped down, some rot and metalwork done, then sprayed. I have issues with rot in the floor pans, and rockers, with a lil (and I mean a lil) in the quarter. Nothing that a good shop can't fix. Would need some holes redrilled on the driver's door for the gfx, and would like to have the antenna shaved and battery tray among other things replaced.

Question is, Would you have them do it? Them meaning a Maaco that is reputable.

It really boils down to how good the Mmaco is at body work, they are all differant so you really need to do your homework just like any other shop. Do as much of the work yourself that you can, 1-it will save alont of money, 2-you will learn along the way and feel good that you did a good amount of the work. I am by no means a body man, but I know some about it so I'm doing as much as I can on my RS, then my buddy that builds hot rods is going to do the rest and spay the car. I look at this this way, I bought the car to learn on as my TA is worth too and still to nice to learn on.

 

Yeah, I am thinking if I can strip the paint at least then maybe costs would be down. Would like to at least have the bodywork done and put it in a sealer, primer (a primer that would work outdoors at least) then when the rest is ready, have it finished in color and clear. The 84 I am keeping, not getting rid of it. The mods I've done to it only reinforce that. I wouldn't have done all the work I did if I wasn't going to keep it. I am thinking it would cost me at least 2-3 grand even at a Maaco to do this car. I know any other body shop may charge me through the roof for it. If I could do some of the metalwork, I would do it. Just need to get some similar gauge sheetmetal to practice with.

 

Stripping it yourself is definitely a good idea. That's where most of my cost came from, they had to completely strip the roof and the guy even showed me a 1/8 inch chunk of bondo they had taken off where the quarter meets the roof. At the maaco I went to, the cost for spraying included sanding down the old paint, materials, and of course the labor. So $450 wasn't bad at all. Body work is what got me in cost. I had a serious dent on my driver side door and also driver side fender.

If you're concerned about the quality of work a particular shop does, it wouldn't hurt to take a trip there and look at all the things they are working on. When I went in for a quote I took a look at some of the things they were doing and it looked like quality work. Definitely check if there are any online reviews on Google because that steered me away from one shop. You can also sort of tell by how the staff treats you. They guy talking to me seemed generally interested in helping me and making my car look nice. If they treat you like any old schmuck they probably just want your money and don't care how well they do your car.

This is very good advice and also SS is not a bad way to go for a car that is not going to be a DD and in bad weather, you just have to keep it clean and wax a bit more often than 2 stage. I'm going with SS stain black on my RS. Summit Racing paint is what I'm going to use and they offer a 2 stage stain, but I don't see the point as my car is not a DD.

 

That paint job came out very nice! Great looking car.
