Front lower air dam

my '90 Camaro was wrecked at the front end...I bought an '88 Camaro for parts and fixed car...had to replace front bumper assembly and radiator core support...now I have several plastic pieces that go under neath front bumper and I assume they mount from bumper to lower radiator support...problem is, I don't remember how they go back on/mount...I'm hoping that somebody has a diagram/picture showing how these parts go back on, or at least tell me how to mount these pieces back on...thank you...

...have searched for info on here about my question, and can only find a few pictures which are really hard to understand how/where they are attached...
haven't had any replies to my thread/post, and wondering if I put this question in right place...I've seen where there has been many views, still needing help...

Re: Front lower air dam

I have an 86 camaro and an 89 firebird, both of which are missing the 2 pieces you have in the middle of your pic. I could take pics of the underside of both if you want, but neither have the TPI big 2 square hole piece you have on the left. The curved piece on the right starts in the middle of the bottom backside of the front bumper and curves up -- it is what helps the air go up from the road to the radiator (as well as the air dam that is bolted to the underside of the radiator core support). I have a couple firebird pics, I will post them here as soon as I find them, and if we need the camaro pics, I will pull it in and put it on the rack and take a couple to send you.

The large "two square hole" piece mounts behind the grill openings and isn't exclusive to TPI cars. I have a 92 RS w/305 that has that piece.

Re: Front lower air dam

greggbruce...thanks for reply and picture...I have the 2 square pieces on each side, you have marked, already on, I never took them off front end when I removed it from donor car... but seem to be in need of the 2 pieces on each side of curved piece [chin] in your picture...maybe that's where the 2 pieces go that are in my picture?...
also, does the center curved piece use 'plastic push pins', or 'bolts and washers' to hold it in place...seems like when I took it off it had the plastic 'push pin/rivets' holding it in place...can't remember...

Yenipenny...this piece you're talking about, does it suppose to slant from grille area to upper part of radiator " / " like that...

actually, according to the option label (W62, I think, I'd have to check), and the boys at the GM dealer, it IS the correct air dam for this vehicle, it came in a kit, all 3 pieces and mounting hardware. I think it was like 56 bucks or something close. And I like how tall it is -- put one on every one of my last 3 cars I've had.

Nope, not for a 85-90 firebird or formula, they have a 4 piece kit. (see the 3 pix below, used parts but these are proper for your bird with that bumper cover)
The 3 piece you have is for a T/A GTA or firebird with ground FX and maybe a 91-2 formula firebird because they use a 5 piece kit.
The 85-90 kit is veery close to the 91-2 kit but the outer 2 lower parts are different between the years.

center

lower

upper side parts that connect, lower fender, lower bumper, center airdam and lower air dam.

Here is the proper parts put together.

And on my car

Re: Front lower air dam

hey your 3rd picture is what I need..... where do I get those?

From the option label for my car, and what the description shows at the dealer for that option code, is the part on my car now. So what you're saying is that the GM catalog listing is now wrong, and they sold me wrong parts? Maybe they superseded it or something to the straight center piece instead of the v shaped one....

Yup, they sold you the wrong parts 4 that yr bird. Unless your car had factory ground FX and someone removed them.
The 3rd pic will work on your car but the 3 other new parts in your kit won't bolt to them properly. They are for ground FX cars.

The correct top center part isn't avalible from GM anymore, I don't think the parts in the 3rd pic are either. You can still find the long lower part now and then.

Check this out and what its for.

Re: Front lower air dam

yep, got the 12395557, which is what I wanted, not really interested what the car was built with... My 87 350 formula had the same....

but I still need those other pieces.....

it says #46 is paint to match when I enter the part number at my dealer... shouldn't be on my vehicle, it's underneath, nobody can see it. unless you lay down and stick your head underneath.

Re: Front lower air dam

#46 and #56 is paint to match on cars with the different lower accent color. There is really 2 different #46s one for ground FX cars and one for with out ground FX.

You'll have to find these parts used most likely.
You will also need to find a lower long airdam part, cut the sides off it to the proper length so it can bolt to those.

Like I said, what you have will work as is but it all won't bolt together correctly unless you start cutting stuff up.

Re: Front lower air dam

I would think it should mount close to the core support which has a slight slant to it. things will line up and fall into place when your close to being correct.

And when you need stuff like that just google it up, you'll find it sooner or later.

close to upper core support as in, right against core support, or close to core support as in 1/2"-1" from it, or does 'this' look right...

I'm a 87-92 formula guy and know what parts they use and on what yrs.

I am not 100% sure on how that fits up in there on the camaros but it looks like its close to correct.

10-4 good luck with your parts search.

Sorry to highjack the OPs thread..
I don't have a pic of the 85-90 firebird with ground FX, T/A or GTA defector setup but I thought this would be a good place to post some pix of firebird air deflectors for people looking for them. Also as you look at the pix below, notice the subtle differences in all the parts, esp the length of the airdams. They are all a lil different.

91-2 Ground FX firebirds, T/A, GTA (missing the yellow plastic color part that bolts over the top of the main center air deflector, it just prettys it up)

Re: Front lower air dam

these are pictures of donor Camaro after I removed front bumper...there was no part that looked like the one that angles from lower bumper to upper radiator, just [2] flat pieces...is it possible that with the donor car being a 6cyl, that it didn't have that piece...I know that with the angled part in, the flat pieces won't go in where they were on donor car...also, I got the part that goes/attaches under lower radiator support from another Camaro, the flat end pieces' two mounting holes don't line up with holes on bumper impact bar...the outer hole on each side does, but the inner hole on each side doesn't...
