*sigh* Back Hatch Lock Replacement? 86 Camaro
*sigh* Back Hatch Lock Replacement? 86 Camaro
Hello all. I am new to the boards. I have been searching everywhere but have had no luck finding what I needed. I got this car from my grandma when she passed away. 2 weeks after obtaining it, I locked the keys in the car. It was early in the morning and didn't have anyone to call. Some random dude came with a crow bar and pried out the back lock so now all you have to do is pull the lock and the hatch opens, handy right? No. The car got stolen. I decided instead of ditching this car that has been taken care of (aside from my minor beatings aka that lock and busting the passenger lock to try and get in) I want to at least secure it so I can put a sound system in and not feel like it's all going to be stolen again. Is it possible to have the metal rewelded around the lock? Where would I even try to find a new hatch lock? Sorry if I am clueless, but I am truly trying. Thanks guys.

Yes, a body shop should be able to weld or fiberglass in enough material to hold the lock cylinder in place. I'm going to have to have that done with my driver's window regulator mounts as I did a very sloppy job of grinding the rivets out on the old one.
As far as a replacement, you best bet would be to find someone that's parting out a car, and get both the lock cylinder and key from them. Normally I'd say just go to a JY, but not many of them leave keys in the cars. Only thing that sucks is you'll have to have different keys for the doors and rear hatch.
Another route would be getting a locksmith to build a lock cylinder to match your existing key, but I imagine that would be a little more expensive.

Oh interesting. That's great information thank you. I am not too worried about keys. I don't tend to open the hatch much, it's really going to be opened once to put the amp and subs in and then I want that sucker on lock down. Unfortunately a giant clear glass window is kind of asking for things to be broken into, but eh, if people really want what I've got, they'll take them. Thanks again, will call some shops and ask around.

You can get a new set of locks and keys for the doors and hatch from Hawks

You can also find a window shade to cover things in the back from one of the sellers here one of the vendors. It sounds like you may also want to invest in an alarm. Good luck!

Another option would be to find a used locking rear storage cover. I got lucky and found one that matched my car in an 86 T/A at the Pull a Part. No key of course, but I'm fine with just being able to close it and hide stuff in it. They were standard on Berlinettas and all factory Bose system Camaros.
Only thing that sucks is the price (assuming you're not lucky like me and find one for $10), and the installation.
You can see what I'm talking about here if you haven't seen one
