Freon is $20 some-odd a can this year and a full charge is more than 4 cans, so you did OK. At least you didn't get ripped off.

At the shop where I work, our price for r12 is $63.50/lb. We don't carry anything except 30 lb disposable cans. Needless to say, I don't carry R12 on my service truck, and I convert a lot of systems to drop ins like 409a.

R12 is rare and hard to find. You should have paid substantially more if your system needed more than a pound or so. If you're more than about 2 lbs low, it's cheaper to switch the system to 134a.

That does sound good, but it is leaking somewhere. Freon should never go bad, or you should never loose it, unless you have a leak somewhere. Usualy the seals around the compressor get dry and crack. But $80 is good even if it only lasts a year.

Actually the most common source of leaks in the a/c system is not running the system in winter, and not using the defroster in the winter (defroster turns on compressor clutch). The seal in the compressor is actually a thin film of oil between a polished steel surface and a polished carbon seal. When the compressor runs the oil pump keeps the seal lubricated. When it sits without operating for weeks, the oil runs off the seal, the freon seeps out. You start the engine and turn on the air, the clutch engages until the low press cutout turns it off, the pump reoils the seal, and there is no sign of a leak. Unfortunately you have shut the proverbial barn door after the horses or in this case freon has left.
