I need help making my decision....New Seats OR Seat Covers????

I am in the middle of fixing up my first car. It is an '83('87 look a like TA). It has come a long way. I am going to get it painted soon for cheap...since I know a friend who paints cars. This is my first car. I want it to look nice, but I dont think I want to go crazy with spending money. I recently started switching the beat up interior in my car to black. I just bought a mint headliner board from a junkyard to be recovered in black, a brand new set of t-top seals, complete black plastic interior panels (includes kick panels, trunk area, roof), a set of black floor mats with a gray screamin chicken on it. I also found a black rug I will be picking up soon. I have power seats in my car now...they are the two tone gray...but are in really bad condition...they are faded and the drivers seats has tears. Now...to finish off my car...is it going to look really cheap getting seat covers? I dont want to go nuts on seats...but I have the chance to get a set of black cloth GTA seats for $300 shipped to my house. Or I can get a set of black cloth seats from a TA for $175 plus shipping. Now...if the shipping is going to end up being more than $100 for the black TA seats then I would definitely be better off buying the GTA seats. Is it worth buying a new set of seat? This is my first car...and I am 16...should I really go that nuts on the car? Where can I find a nice set of solid black seat covers that do not look cheap?

Only you and your wallet can decide to go nuts or not. What I will say is when those tops are off everyone will be looking in your car and if the seats are crap everything else you do will be for naught. If you can get good cloth seats that look clean then go for it, otherwise recover.

I found a set of 4 charcoal grey cloth seats from a 98 Firebird for $125 at a swap meet.
Just keep searching, I had been looking for seats for quite a while and got lucky. Try a large swap meet. Check out GrandAm and Grandprix bucket seats ive heared that they will fit too. Good luck w/ the search. You could always get some seat covers till you find the right seats.

lol..actually...the first set of seats I looked at were the corbeau. I love the way they look...but I also need back seats. They are way to expensive for my tastes. I will just have to keep looking. Oh well. Maybe one day I will come across a nice set of seats a cheap amount. Thanks.

Get new seats cause when people see seat covers than they know the seats are messed up. Plus most of the seat covers dont look that good anyway.

Yeah, I would try to find some fourth generation seats in a junkyard or on ebay or something. They would look much better than seat covers.

I like the carrera seats from corbeau. They look very nice. Does anybody know if the black seat is edged with silver or gray or charcoal? I like the seats so much I'm willing to design the interior around them.

Thanks for all your help. I am going to continue my search..and in the meantime get black seat covers. I guess I will settle for any seats as long as they are in good condition...and now I am only looking to spend $200 or less. I wanted a solid black...but I may go and get a set of Z28 gray and black seats. Do you think they will look good with black plastic interior panels? If so then what color should I get the headliner? I have a gray rug that needs cleaning and black floormats with the gray birds. Do you think a red TA with black and gray interior is going to look wierd? I wanted to do the whole red on black thing..but I dont think it is going to work out. Let me know.

i'm not too sure that they or grand prix seats will work. i own a grand prix too, and the seats are very comfy...in a gtp anyway. as far as grand am seats...they suck, hurt your back after about 7 minutes. try 4th gen seats. you will spend 250 max for a set of clean cloth ones, if you keep your eyes open.

I know what ya mean. I'm 16 and I want my car to look good without spending too much money. I would DEFINENTLY go with new seats. I know some people with seat covers and it just doesn't look right. I picked those seats up for $150 at a junkyard out of a 96 Camaro. They make my interior look a lot better now. And they feel a lot better too. So just keep looking. Go to some junkyards this weekend... and look in some 4th Gen Firebirds and Camaros and find some good seats. Good Luck! Oh yeah.. where did you get all black interior panels and how much were they?

I bought the black panels off of ebay. I couldnt find anything black in any of the junkyards around me on Long Island. I almost had a complete black interior (mint from a wrecked '87 that had just came in)...one guy said he would hold it...I went back the next day and it was stripped. I was only going to end up paying $200 for it. But I have had no luck in junkyards since...besides small parts. The black interior panels were about $180 shipped from Michigan to NY. They are in absolutely mint condition...and it came with everything including black kick panels with black carpeting. I found a black carpet for $50...now all I need are the seats and seatbelts. Just look around for the panels. Your best bet is to try and repaint them first. Mine were cracked...so I didnt even bother. But I know people in the car business who end up making $$$ off of people who get rid of thier plastic panels. They just sand them down...then use a spray primer. After they use the vinyl interior paint. I helped my friend paint his interior in his stang. It is worth a try...if worse comes to worst then just buy new ones like you were originally going to. Good Luck.
