Is it totally broken where it doesn't work AT ALL? Mine moves around when I'm driving, but when I shut the car off, it goes down to the correct reading. Rather than fix it, I've just made a habit of looking at where its at before I turn the car on. I don't know how much it would cost to fix it though.

It might not be your guage that is broken. My guage moves around a little but is not accurate by any means. I had the local Chevy dealership diagnose it and I have a bad Sending Unit. Ok well put a new sending unit it right?? On our cars the sending unit is mounted above the gas tank and the only way to get to it is to drop the whole rearend which is VERY VERY tedious.... They quoted me $700.00 to fix it. They were going to replace the Pump well they had the rear end out so it wouldn't go out a week later and then have to spend all the money again on labor to drop the rearend.
Well for 700.00 I decided I can live without the fuel guage... I just use my handy dandy Tripometer.... I hear 3rd Gens are known for their wonderfull gas guages...

Just my thoughts...

Just to let you know, I've just put in an after market level sensor. The replacement piece which includes all new suction, return, and vent pipes is $400.00 from the dealer, and $350.00 from an automotive parts house. The after market piece cost $30.00, and had to be modified to fit on the pipes. Not to difficult to do, and yes. it's a pain-in-the-butt to drop the fuel tank. I am also rebuilding the rear suspension, so I already had the rear end on the ground, I sugest you wait to fix this when you are doing mods to the rear, with the rear end out of the way, it's eazy to drop the an EMPTY tank. A new fuel pump cost @ $50.00 and the filter sock is @ $10.00. Also consider a new fuel tank gasket(o-ring) and a new lock down ring. I munched mine removeing the fuel sender and pipes.

It sounds like there is a possibility that the gage itself may have borken. Since it is in the 90° position, I assume that would be on half tank like a firebird. (never paid much attn to a camaro)

I have seen where a gage gets "stuck" and needs a little push to get moving. The coil could have gone bad too.

Look at the gage first its easier to fix than the sender.

9short story, had a friend tear his door apart to fix a broken motor, only to find that it was a wire on the opposite side of the car that was bad. he spent 6 hours for nothing. I told him to check the wires first to make sure, but....

Check the simple first, then go to more complecated.

John

I agree with okfoz,

I had a bad temp gage it was stuck I took the panel off and flicked it and then it worked fine. If that still doesnt work Id get a new gage or even used. Very cheap out of a junkyard especially when compared to the sending unit.
