Orange Peel this bad. Holy crap!
Trying a new paint. Hawthorne Rayflex single stage. mix 8:2:1 (p/r/h).
No matter how I set the gun up, this stuff comes out textured. The closest I got to 'ok' was 50psi and 3 turns out on the fluid ****. (wheres with a 3:1 2-stage I'd be 4 1/2 turns out, 30-35psi at the gun). 1.4 tip. I don't own anything smaller.
I emailed the company. Don't know if I have a bad batch of if their reduction guidelines should be burned. I'm tempted to double the reducer, but I don't know if it will run the olympics.
(I could also just throw the paint out, but I already jammed the car).

Have you tried it on a flatter panel? I also used single stage for jambs and found it very OP, but when I sprayed on flatter areas like the cowl I was able to get it flatter. The distance and angle of the gun seems to be critical. I'll see if I can find some pics of mine. I was using PPG DBU with 1.4 tip. I don't think I was running that high pressure.

Ouch. Re-sanding the jambs(decklid?) after a goof really sucks too. Did the viscosity look ok after it was mixed? I think you're on the right track by over-reducing it. Sounds like you've done everything else.

I then continued playing with the fender for about 20 minutes. In our out, pressure up or down, fan wide or narrow, gun close or far. It won't atomize right. It just comes out thick. When you 'dust' a panel, you get droplets that are rain sized and spaced far apart.
I'm tempted to try over reducing it. I'm not all that concerned with the finish in the jambs but I'd like to get this product 'figured out' before I shoot the car.
Their 2-stage lays down like glass. I don't know what the deal is with this stuff.

I'm going to double the reducer and spray another test panel. see what happens. If it doesn't fix it I'll throw it out and hope another brands orange is close

I've had that result with single stage that's been sitting around for a few years.

Have a good drier setup? It's humid as hell up here in NE this week, I wouldn't be shooting any paint around here last couple days without AC in the shop.

Added more reducer and shot a few misc things. This paint is garbage.
So adding more reducer corrected the orange peel somewhat, it's still got way more peel than a new car . In 15 minutes the paint shrunk and exposes all the 500grit scratches in the primer/sealer under it.
Throwing the gallon out as we speak. Scuffing the car and shooting 2 stage.

I've used the brand before in 2 stage but never their single. Wanted to try it.
It's wicked thick. You have to over reduce it. But then coverage is poor (4+ coats required), and it shrinks considerably.
Some google searching, folks have reported the same problem. Having to way over reduce it to get rid of the peel. Although, it still has peel about consistent with my 2012 GMC. I'm going to try and wet sand it later just for educational purposes, but I'm going to 320 the whole thing reseal it and shoot bc/cc. Can't risk a failure 2 months down the road.

Re: Orange Peel this bad. Holy crap!
Wet sanded it with 1500, then compound and buffed it.
Honestly, I'm really not impressed with the shine. I think if I went much farther I would have hit the primer.
Still, it shrunk so bad I see the sand scratches. I suspect if you prepped the car with 600, put down 4 overly reduced coats, wet sanded it, then buffed the crap out of it it will look like a decent 5 year old lacquer job. haha
Ahh well. Was a fun experiment. Back to BC/CC.

Some thicker paint prefers to be sprayed out of a pressure pot. I can use my iwata lph-400 and have decent peel, or spray with my pressure pot setup and it'll come out like glass. Same tip size.

It does spray better out of one gun than the other, but both kind of suck.
I'll wetsand the jams, and bc/cc the rest of the car.

I can't wait to see your car finished, I have been watching your progress over the years and very excited to see you are putting paint on! Bet you are too!

Re: Orange Peel this bad. Holy crap!
I'd like to get it done yes. I bought this car ('88 formula) in March 2012, so it's been over a year which is quite longer than a typical build for me but it seems I can't seem to dedicate enough time for the car. I just hope to drive it a little before winter.
It's probably one of my better builds in terms of the parts used, although we've had a few quirks along the way. The body on this car really screwed me. It looked straight when I bought it, just had a bad paint job with clear peeling. Two spots had pitted rust, so I had the body media blasted. So much freaking filler came out of it. The car was not even close to straight. I have HUNDREDS of hours into just the body work.
