Viewing an 89 Camaro, needs work...

Went and drove an hour to look at an 89 Camaro RS

First, the price is 900 FIRM I guess that's not bad, but here are the
BADS:
Floor rusting out along outside edge (Under Driver's Door)
Both Quarter panels rusted and damaged severely (needs replacing)
Needs Paint and a new passenger door, new fenders in near future

Pros:

5 Speed Original
2.8 V6 runs like a top, no leaks 89k miles
Interior is decent, minor repair needed
all glass is good, no scratches or cracks
Tires are good
Runs and drives, clutch in great shape, tranny shifts good

My talents: I'm good at replacing bolt on, spot weld on panels, never tackled a rear quarter, sand/paint/minor body I can do. Good with engines, transmissions i'm not too familiar with, just how to install.
----

Just looking for general ideas, comments, suggestions

As a secondary, I found a roller that is supposed rust free with all panels but one passenger fender, already primed for 900 as well.

84 Z28 originally had a 305 with an auto

Needs:
Motor
Trans
Probably minor bolts and wiring
Rims/Tires

Pros:

CLEAN, needs to be put back together though
Has all parts that it needs except motor trans
From New Mexico
3.23 posi rear
All glass in tact

---
ANY IMPUT IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.

I originally looked at 78-81 Camaros but those are hard to come by and I'm looking for a project that wont drain me dry, hours aren't very important here.

Re: Viewing an 89 Camaro, needs work...

If the floorboards are rusted its probably because the firewall rusted-through at the cowl, and the gaskets and grommets that seal anything that passes through the firewall are all kaput.

To determine the severity of the firewall/cowl leakage, you need to remove the carpet and insulation, and then run a garden hose into the cowl. Only then will you see the Niagra Falls that exists behind the dash.

To solve the leakage issue, you will need to remove EVERYTHING from both sides of the firewall, and you will need to fix every single hole.

Good luck with that.

I'm in the process of doing exactly what I just described. I'm already committed to it. If I had to start over, I probably would have chosen a different project.

Well, opinions may differ, but I'd go with the roller if it is truly clean and rust-free. It would help to know what you plan to do with the car, but IMO you will probably spend less getting it into shape.

Want a nice clean sunday car, not premier show quality but a good looker, ill eventually want to put a 350 in it, and I prefer a manual car. Might go to the drag strip with it, not intentionally going to make it a drag car, though, just for funs and giggles.

And yeah, that's just the start, both rear quarters need replacing on the 89.

Where are you located? I have a mostly complete 85 Z28 HT 305 TPI auto in the driveway that you can have for $900. Rust free floors and quarters.

Re: Viewing an 89 Camaro, needs work...

I would not rush into anything just because its there now. Especially a 2.8 .I would not even consider anything under 5.0 .I would think you could find something a little better for $900.00
Then again I have no idea what Camaro shopping in Green Bay is like.

Side note = 89k miles most likely has rolled over and is more like 189k. That mileage indicator rolls over at 100k back to 0 and starts over again, and again.
Sorry , if I sound negative but I would keep looking.

Re: Viewing an 89 Camaro, needs work...

Thank you, any imput is appreciated.

I actually found a different Camaro

1988 IROC-Z with 58,000 miles on it
Virtually no rust (I mean all cars have some rust)
305 5 speed
Brand new custom Two-Tone paint (Black/Burnt Orange)

The only bad about it so far is that the tires are sort of weather checked :/
But for 3500 I think it's a great deal. Just need to come up with the money now :P

Nice find. Its costing you more up front but that's nothing compared to what you would've had to spend to bring the others up to what you're looking at now especially if you had to do a engine swap.
OK, one last thing... There is no way to know how many miles are on some of these car by looking at the odometer. They roll over. Mine says 29k.but it has 129k on it and it looks great so you can't tell.
Anyway I would love to see some photos please.
