my wheels are stuck
i bought some 91-92 z28 rims this weekend, i cleaned them up real good, and went to put them on today. when i tried to take off the stock wheels, the rears won't come off. the fronts came off no problem. could the wheel be rusted to the brake drum, or is it something else? how can i get it off?

I work at America's Tire where I live, and here is what we do to get those off. In fact, we had a 4th gen Trans Am with the exact same problem.
Spray a lot of WD-40 or other lubricant on the surfaces you can get it into. Get a friend with a floor jack to get ready to push it hard from behind the wheel (under the car). Get on your butt and kick back side to side on each end of the wheel facing you as your friend hits it with the jack. This may take a little while and variation of what i said, it will work (unless of course the hub is totally the wrong size and your used a sledgehammer to get it on in the first place).
good luck!
Eric

I've found that the easiest way to get stuck wheels off is to apply force at just the right spot. Raise the car so the tire is about 6" or so off the ground. Then, kick diagonally down into the tire so you hit with the side of your foot dead center of the tire halfway between the bottom of the rim and the edge of the tire. This seems to get it on the first or second try 9 times out of 10. If that doesn't work, just try hitting it every way you can until you figure out how to get it off. If you don't understand, I'll draw a picture later.

Have you backed off the brake shoes by turning the star wheel? You'll have to use a small screwdriver to hold the lever out of the way to spin it back in. Once you have the shoes back in bang the outside of the drum with a rubber mallot. I had a drum on a used rear end I bought that was badly siezed to the axle hub. I drilled small holes at the mating point of the drum and hub until it finally released. Keep spraying with lubricant and drilling until it comes free. You should get a new drum afterwards though.

How to Remove a Stuck Wheel:
Leave Lugnuts off of the Wheel that doesn't seem to want to come off. Then get into the car. Start the car and check for traffic and pull out into the street. Turn your Steering Wheel to the left as far as it will go. Then press the Gas Pedal all the way to the floor. At this time the car may begin to spin around in circles (this is part of the loosening process). Just keep doing this until you feel a large bump, hear a big thud, or hear something that may sound like glass breaking(this doesn't matter right now because you can retrieve the Wheel in a few moments). Now that one of these things have happened remove your foot from the Gas Pedal. The car should slowly stop spinning in circles(NOTICE: You may see the Wheel go flying past you and at this point you know you have successfully removed the Wheel). This is a good time to go and retrieve the wheel(If you can't find the wheel and heard Glass shatter then walk to your neighors house's as the Wheel might be in their Living Room or the front seat of their car, If they aren't home just go get the Wheel and if they are home and refuse to give the Wheel to you, Call the Police and tell them your neighbor refuses to give you your Property) Now that you have gotten you Wheel place it into your hatch. Take the spare tire from the hatch and install it so you can drive safely home(Remember DO NOT drive over 50mph with the Spare Tire install as it is only rated to 50mph. Driving over 50mph could cause you to loose control of your car causing you to wreck or hurt someone. Remeber Safty First). Hope this helps

you'd be a ****ing idiot to try that ****. All you need to do is remove lug nuts and pull outta your drive way, and then roll over a stacked 4x4 this will loosen it up and the wheel won't come off and you won't kill your car. Use pentrating oil too.

Kinda different...but I remeber one time I was working on the rear changing a rear oil seal....got it all back together..wanted to make sure everything was working...I had the passenger side tire off...the other tire on...my dad told me to go start the car and put it in drive and let go of the breaks to make sure the tires would turn....well we forgot to put a couple lug nuts on to hold the rear drum in place....took my foot off the brakes...heard a weird wobbling sound...then the drum cam flying off....scariest thing ever..luckily it didnt hit anything.
dang dude that would freak me out too! Hey Diabolical did you get your wheel off yet?

Not as dagnerous as some of you're other stories but my dad was once changing the rear brakes on my brother's mazda (drum rear,) and he after putting it back together with no tires on the car, he had my bro start up the car and pump the brakes. Well, he forgot to put the drum back on the drivers side and the shoes and a million little springs went flying outward. Imagine all the curses and sayings that were said putting that b*tch back together

had this problem on a few cars. I usually jack it up and take a piece of wood & a 5 lb sludge hammer. Take the wood an hold it up the the back side of the wheel & hit the wood. if you hit the tire it will only bounce. you have to hit the rim. the wood will keep from marring up the wheel really bad, although it still might.
This seems to be common with aluminum rims.

The reason your wheel is stuck to the hub is because the when water gets inbetween the steel hub and the aluminum wheel it corrodes. I worked at Frank Anderson tire, we had this 85 camaro come in that was driven by a guy who hadn't taken a single wheel off in 8 years, and he parked it outside. It was a SOB to get the wheels off.

if i have a pita lugnut, i'll make an extension for the lugwrench to try and break it loose( a long piece of metal pipe works well), or stand on the lugwrench and bounce around a bit til it breaks loose.

Put sulfiric acid in beetween the wheel and the hub. What ever is in there that is holding it on will desolve right off. Hope you dont need those tires. Better do a real good burn out before tring my idea.

just use some penitrating lube (luqid wrench) and let it set for a while and then try kicking it off.
I had a wheel come off once. It was in my first car, a '76 Toyota Corolla. I was taking my friend home at, like, 2 in the morning. Wham! Left rear drops a foot and sparks go everywhere! I thought that I had hit a pothole and broken a strut or something. Got pulled over and noticed that the wheel was missing. My dad found it the next day about a mile up the road.
that happend to my dad and us b/f we were in our 67 fastback mustang gt and we stopped 2 get sumtin in a store and we came out and some 1 had taken off the lugs, tryin 2 steal it,but we must have scared them off we got in the car and down the hway goin bout 60 and the tire fell out and made us spin out like 3 times, later we found the wheel rolled down the road about 2 miles through trafic lol, it smashed the rear quarter and compacted it. but we were all fine but we never found the lugs, or the A$$hole who loosened our lugs
