spray paint

i am pretty good with body work and my el camino shows it but i waswondering, should i attempt to paint my camaro myself with duplicor? the hood really needs it since it has a rust bubble the size of a mountain and i am getting out of school for xmas break so i will have the time. should i go for it. if i have five people or more back me on this i will do it.

It sounds to me that you are trying to do this paintjob without spending much money. I'm sure it would be cheaper to buy a couple quarts of automotive enamel and spray that, then to buy a whole bunch of spray bombs. Also much better quality paint and finish. If you aren't super particular on the color, you might go to a local automotive paint store and see what they have in the way of mis-mixed paint. Most stores have some paint around that they mixed the color wrong and can't sell normally, so they sell it pretty cheap.

I just used spray can plasticote to repair my bumper where some jerk hit my car in the parking garage. I did the job over thanksgiving break and no one can even tell where i fixed it. hell, i think it rivals the $250 job my girlfriend just had done to her new honda to fix a smaller paint falw than mine. Just do it, and if you botch it, you didn't waste a hell of lotta cash.

I painted most of my camaro gunmetal grey using duplicolor. 3-4 cans @$3.75 a piece cans should get a hood at a pretty cheap price. Duplicolor is laquer so it will need rubbing compund & a buff if you care enough to have a ref;ective finish. As stated above,, if you mess up,, you haven't lost much cash.

Well, if you screw it up, it'll cost you a fortune to get it repaired properly. Getting a screw-up fixed always costs more than if you pay to have it done right the first time. You'll have to strip the hood and start over.

I say go for it, the worst that happens is you sand the hood down again. is there ant spray paint that you can clearcoat and it will still look good, and what clearcaot would you use, do you have to use flat piant under it.

I'll add here that I thought you were talking about doing the whole car with duplicolor when I replied above. If it is just the hood, you could go the duplicolor route, or just purchase a pint of automotive paint (probably well under $45 depending upon color). You still need to clearcoat both to get a glossy finish unless you go with an automotive enamel.

What year Elcamino? I'm in the same situation. My '81 Elcamino is my show car, and my T/A is my daily driver. I'm gonna paint my T/A with some satin black. Alot of hot rodders around here do that, and it turns out really good. Some people don't spray it "wet" enough, and you can see the lines from going back and forth. But others look really good.

Since it already looks awful ... go for it. Just remember you need at least several thin coats. Then wetsand. Then polish. Then polish some more. It's alot of work but the results can be surprising.
