Biggest F-body fail I have ever seen

For those who haven't seen this yet..

Here is a quote from the youtube video ... with a link below

"One lovely spring evening, my father decided to power wash the engine bay in a 1989 Pontiac Trans Am GTA he was about to sell. Somehow, he created a SEVERE misfire by doing so. In his attempts to "dry out" the engine so it would run normally again (revving the **** out of it), lots of raw fuel from the misfire are dumped into the catalytic converters, making them melt and shoot molten metal chunks out of the tail pipe (as seen in video). He decided to try and blow the rest out so the exhaust wouldn't clog, I didn't have the sense at the time to tell him that's a BAD ****ing idea...I was just worried about filming how badly the car was running haha. The cats got SUPER HOT! Something under the car caught fire almost instantly and the result is what you see... Enjoy the CHAOS of our night! (Happened 4/2/15)"

I saw that yesterday on FB. I just wonder how long he was revving his motor to clear a clogged cat, to make that happen?

Apparently he was revving it for a while in hopes that the horrible misfire would go away... that is what caused the cat to melt.

Then he made the genius decision to keep revving it even more to blow out the now melted cat... without stopping to ask "I wonder why my cat melted?"

Re: Biggest F-body fail I have ever seen

After viewing that, part of me thinks that was done on purpose..... Maybe to collect insurance money. I'm not usually the conspiracy guy, but who revs their car like that, THEN does it again after pieces of the cat are literally coming out of the tailpipes enough to do this.

That, along with how the dad(owner) is almost smiling the entire time and they cut audio, makes me suspect! I would be devastated!

No way that was done on purpose. They are either among the smartest or dumbest thirdgen owners, and I'd bet heavy on the latter.

1) Why was that car being driven in the winter?
2) "Dad" is either drunk or completely retarded.
3) The kid recording is obviously from the same gene pool.
4) Never ever bring your car to Motorcars of Dutchess Performance...
5) I want to give a shout out to all the police/firemen/paramedics/all military branches who come to the rescue, both domestic and foreign. Even if it is to save idiots.

Stuff happens but that was totally unnecessary and totally preventable. Glad no one got hurt. wonder if he wants to sell a fender........

Re: Biggest F-body fail I have ever seen

I would say the fuel line ruptured under the car, causing a loss in fuel pressure and creating a bad enough lean condition to overheat and melt the cat, then just a matter of time till the fuel under the car ignited and the rest is history. You can see the fire starting on the driverside of the trans tunnel when he first walks behind the car as it starts to burn.

Shame, looked like a nice car.

Sounds like a good explanation, but the guy said this happened right after power washing the engine. I doubt power washing the engine would rupture a fuel line

I never understood why Pontiac never covered the fuel lines and make the underbody smoother. The fuel filter is really exposed .

Clogged cats will kill anything. It is possible that little or no damage was done to the engine.

What a shame! If I had a GTA like that, I would've stopped when FLAMING CHUNKS started coming out of the exhaust. I would've also done everything in my power to put out the fire instead of smiling at it with my finger up my butt.

I wonder how much sentimental value/attachment that he had to that GTA? I know in my case, that I've had my T/A before I had my permit so I am VERY attached to it. So I think any major damage done to my T/A would hit me pretty hard.
