How hard is it to swap out speedometers???
I broke off my speedo needle while installing red lights last night and now it doesn't work
,all well gives me an excuse to get the 140mph one I've wanted for awhile
,how do you swap them,I couldn't get mine off to get to the bulbs behind it and I had to bend it out a little to get to the bulbs thats how I broke it

The swap is as easy as putin gas in the tank.Did you take the two bolts out? They are located on the back of the gauge cluster. And take the speedo cable off.
Uhhh, yeah… I just replace all the bulbs (plain clear bulbs with orange condom covers) with red bulbs. There were a couple of nuts holding the whole cluster down, but after removing them the whole kit and caboodle came loose. No cables to disconnect or anything like that.
I replace the bulbs from the back of the tachs/cluster. No problems what so ever. The needles were a bit hard to get off… but all I did was giggle them gently and before I knew it they came right off…
If the speedo needle is the only thing that you broke off, you could just take the rpm needle and put it in its place, for now. (Unless money isn’t an object and all you needed was an excuse to replace them)
The only problem I have right now is that the readings are a little bit off. For instance, when I’m doing 65, my speedo says 60, and when I have ¼ tank left, I really have ½ tank left…
Remember to jot down where the needles were when you pulled ‘em off…
Good Luck!

You only have the speedo cable if you have a mechanical speedometer. Firebirds and Camaros changed from mechanical to electric in different years. I'm not sure about Firebirds but Camaros changed in 1990 i believe.
I changed my speedo last month. I took the cluster out, removed the two screws holding the speedo in, disconnected the plug from the speedo to the tach and replaced the speedo.
It took me about an hour to remove the cluster. It was much easier putting it back in though.
First take off the guage bezel and the other parts behind it, like the lense. Then remove the two thin metal nuts in the area where the lights for the service engine soon, secuirity ect.. are, with an extension and a 10mm socket. After that remove the plastic parts underneath the steering column so you can drop it. Remove the two 13mm nuts that hold the steering column on and lower it a few inches. Gently pull out the cluster a little bit. Nows the fun part, you have to remove the speedo cable. Use a long scew driver to push on the tab that holds the speedo cable on and then pull the cable. The area you have to work in is really small. I followed the cable back a little and pulled from a place i can reach easily. Then pull out the cluster the rest of the way. It's a lot easier to replace the bulbs with the cluster out.
Hope this helped.
Also i have a 110mph speedo i'd sell for $20 if you can't find a 145 for cheap.
