Window roller and pin wobble

(Drives Side)
On the left side of the window there is a roller/wheel that rides the window track. Where the roller mounts, is on a turned down shaft/pin. It has a taper to it, and the roller would be pressed on the end. Now this shaft/pin should it be tight against its mounting point-(Sheet metal that is bent 180 deg, and made parallel to one another, it wraps around the glass and is then compressed). It leaves an overhang on the bottom to place the pin through a hole about 3/8''

As of right now its free to move/wobble. Does anyone know if it should? I'm assuming it had gotten loose. I'm ready to put a nice Tig weld on the pin to the sheet metal.

This is leading me to believe why my window rattles so much.

Has anybody else been able to find the rollers and guide online, I haven't had much luck. Unless i'm better off making one on the lathe.

Does your other window rattle? If it doesn't, I would take that door panel off and examine the regulator on that side.

The pin is riveted to the regulator, it should be solid mounted. The roller should have a bit of "play" on it though.

And your correct. I took the other side off and took notice that it was fixed. On the pins they're ball nosed at the end, that's the reason they have ease to pivet; prevents binding. Anyway, I tack welded the ends of the pin. The window does not rattle anymore, its pretty mint.

This part truthfully should of been made with a thread on the end.

Re: Window roller and pin wobble

I am curious and would like to know if you had any rattles when the window was down? My windows only rattle when they are up. If I lower them just an inch, the rattle goes away. Could this be that same roller you describe? I replaced the bottom stops on both windows, and the rattle is about the same on both windows. Like I said, if I slightly lower the window, on either side, then there are no rattles. Did you have to remove that piece in order to tack weld it?

There are some what I would call plastic hooks that the window sits in when up all the way. I would guess yours either need adjustment or are broken. Pull the door panel and take a look. I'm sure there are some threads on here on how to adjust them, but it is basically just a bolt.

I have looked in my FSM and don't find anything close to what you describe. Would you have a photo or diagram of these "plastic hooks". Unfortunately, I don't have a parts breakdown catalog to look at. That would probably help.

Re: Window roller and pin wobble

The GM Service Manual is going to be as good as anything you're going to find. There's an entire section on adjusting the door glass and hardware. The book refers to them as "up stops". You might be further ahead to just pull the door panel, and carefully observe the door glass as you roll them up and down. As they near the top, you'll see a couple plastic guide hooks that align with the hardware bolted to the door. All of the hardware and the door glass is adjustable. If the various guides or the window aren't aligned right, the hooks miss the pieces they're supposed to engage, and the window will be out of position or rattle.

Also, if the door panel removed you'll have rattles. The inner window wipe on the door panel plays a large roll in reducing noise and supporting the windows.

Re: Window roller and pin wobble

Thanks for the info Lon. I am definitely going to check out the innards of my doors soon. I've been doing some searching and found that it may be the upper stops being broken or missing, so I will check that out. Otherwise, the doors are very quiet. The window rattle can be annoying, but only if I don't have the radio going! haha
