Rocker Panel / Pinch Weld Rust

Hello Guys
Someone lifted the car from the pinch weld back in the day so he twisted where the fender couples to the frame and it rusted.
How could I repair it?

Wire brush.

Rust neutralizer.

Paint.

Large ball-peen hammer for whoever smashed the pinch-weld.

Theres a hole in the pinch as you can see!!
How about cutting and replacing the metal?
Will it be hard to do?

Re: Rocker Panel / Pinch Weld Rust

I just did this on my trans am, I had the exact same hole. heres my thread
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/inte...-interior.html

Post #'s 33 and 41 show the kind of cutting I had to do. what you cant see is that I straightened the pinch with vice grips, wire wheeled the rust, rust neutralized, and painted it over. then obviously I welded in new metal and seam sealed and painted

Re: Rocker Panel / Pinch Weld Rust

Two basic problems with cheap welders:

1. Poor penetration of the weld.
2. Likelihood that the rod/wire will "stick" when the arc is struck badly.

Quality welders are expensive for a reason.

Cheap welders are reviled for the same reason.

At a minimum you need a 30 amp outlet to plug a cheap welder into.

This is a great cheap but decent welder that can do most anything on 110V and less than 1/8" reliably. You will need to get some gas though and an auto dark helmet from china freight.

Re: Rocker Panel / Pinch Weld Rust

Go with a gmaw mig welder. for body work like this, using shielding gas is way better than flux core wire.

Everyone says stay away from harbor freight welders but at least there's a store near you that you can return/exchange if a problem arises, it's a different story with all the other cheap Chinese welders on the internet. Obviously if you can get a used miller or Lincoln electric for a good price that is the way to go.

Re: Rocker Panel / Pinch Weld Rust

Check the manufacturer's specs on the welder you are considering.

Be sure your outlet is rated for the manufacturer's power-requirement spec.

Re: Rocker Panel / Pinch Weld Rust

I am fixing that exact spot now. It isn't hard, it is just a pain because the floor is there.

Also, you don't need much of a welder since you're only doing sheet metal. You'll likely blow through it if you don't practice first.
