Cowl hood recommendations?

I have recently built a 383 engine and I used FIRST fuel injection's intake manifold setup. I didn't think my stock iroc hood would fit and I was right. So I'm thinking a cowl induction style hood is my option. Has anybody else recently used the FIRST system and this issue? I'd like to avoid having a massive rise in my hood. But I don't want to buy one of that's too shallow. I measured and I think I could get away with 2 inch. Anybody else have this setup?

Haha. Yes it's in there right. It was advertised to be a stock height fit too, at least that's what I read on the website.. But it's absolutely not. I've got a standard smallblock Chevy engine. I used the original mounts after I cleaned them up, it's all pretty standard. But I'm an easy 1-1/4 inches from being able to close the hood.

I've swear I've seen pics of in cars with stock hoods. Heck i think you can fit a STB over it, and STILL be under a stock hood! Man, I dunno.....

Where's it hitting?

Re: Cowl hood recommendations?

Plenty of pics on their site of both Firebirds AND C4 Corvettes with FIRST intakes and stock hoods, and BOTH are lower than stock Camaro hoods.

Something is wrong.

It hits on forward upper part of the throttle body. And I'm positive that everything is properly installed and fitted. The engine runs. The transmission shifts. Everything is great. Fenders are on. Bumper cover is on. Everything is good. The hood is a stock IROC style. The FIRST system is pretty standard TPI. I know on their website that it used to say it's stock height for 1985-88 IROC or something like that. I can't find that anymore. When I bought the setup I was one of the first to get it after they had a pretty bad fire at the shop and had to get up and running again. I'll contact Ken and see if something is different. I did change the engine K member as well during this build, but it's all stock measurements too.

This is a passage from the installation instructions: If it is not obvious which throttle body configuration will be right for your application, the dimensions shown in Figure 1, page 7 may be helpful. The overall height of the manifold is the same as the 1985-88 Corvette or IROC Camaro.

I believe you that people have em under stock hoods. I did the same google search that you did. My car is a 1990 and I can't imagine that makes a difference. But I'm also sure that it doesn't fit. It's not a really big deal, I was just looking for good hood recommendations.

Re: Cowl hood recommendations?

Well if you don't mind getting another hood, that solves one problem, but I'd be more concerned with WHY. Regardless of whether or not you like the look of a cowl hood, it'd drive me crazy not knowing why.

Re: Cowl hood recommendations?

Pics. Kinda cool looking at the very least. Sorry it's sideways. I agree about knowing what the deal is. I'll get to the bottom of it. I don't let stuff go, but the engine is done and in and after about $19,000 in parts and stuff on this project a hood is not a big deal. Like I said, I changed the K member and the engine is a total build from all brand new parts, but everything fits great y'know? An inch and a quarter should be a pretty obvious difference somewhere. Like something else would really not fit.

Re: Cowl hood recommendations?

I've seen some members here run a Glasstek ZL1 style low rise hood, really pretty looking. As for the engine sitting high, I wonder if it's in the motor mounts? When I replaced mine, I found out they only fit one way and then the engine definitely sits higher than before. The HSR barely fits under the hood now and no room for the STB.

Wowsers. That sits higher than my Crosswind intake (RPM Air-Gap clone)carburetor, and 14x3 air cleaner setup on brand new poly motor mounts.

I wish they made Firebird hoods.

Re: Cowl hood recommendations?

My new motor mounts made the engine sit higher, but MAYBE 1/4", but probably closer to 1/8". Minimal amounts....certainly not 1.25".

Re: Cowl hood recommendations?

Says he changed k member, so likely there? I have one of these that I have yet to install and I certainly don't want a cowl hood. I've also seen many that sit under a stock hood.

Re: Cowl hood recommendations?

I thought about the K member too.

....if I WAS going to go with a cowl, I'd choose the 2" glasstek.

I thought the K member too. But the oil pan is only about 3/4" above the steering assembly. It all looks right under there.

I agree on the glasstek. That's what I was looking at before I originally posted.

I've had this car since I was 17 (17 years ago). It's pretty clean and I had it repainted about 8 years ago now. I've always had this image in my head of how I wanted it to look and drive. I'm finally able to get it done now. I built my own 383 and spared no expense, bolted up a tko600 RR, put wilwood disk brakes all around, put a moser 12 bolt rear end on it, and tied the frame together. I've had borla exhaust on it since I got it painted and it has always sounded good. My drivers seat is faded and needs to be re-covered but the rest of the interior looks good. I have a 2003 Z06 corvette that is very low miles and nice to drive, but this freaking IROC just fits. I would rather drive it over any car on the planet I think.

Red with beechwood is a pretty hot combination too. Around where I live you never see red ones. Lots of Black.

Re: Cowl hood recommendations?

I've had mine about 20 years. ...and I've also recently built a 383 for it, and ALSO backed it with a TKO 600. ...while there will always be a few odds and ends, the only major piece left is the rear. Plan is for a Hawk's 8.8, but just put a roof on the house so money is tight LOL. Exhaust, brakes, chassis, suspension, all done.

sounds perfect to me. If I had it to do over again I wouldn't have gone with the moser rear end. It's a bit noisy even after setting the pinion angle. Other than that it's a work of art and works great. Same thing with the roof! Just had it put on two weeks ago. This car project thing is a sickness though, I can't stop.
