I used Steel Rubber on a hard top about 10 years ago. They still seal well. There is some slight separation at the glued joints and some small cracking at the B pillar. over all they have held up well. Car has been kept outside.

Re: Best Vender for Weatherstrips

I have Metro on my hatch and doors, and they fit and sealed great! Almost TOO well until they wear in a little.

....I JUST purchased new T top WS from Metro as well, but have yet to install. I can report back soon, but thus far Metro has performed well.

Re: Best Vender for Weatherstrips

I prefer Fairchild products. 1A Auto sells them. For the doors, they are the only one that I could find that had the hard plastic reinforcements molded inside the ends of the stripping like the stock pieces.

I've been following this thread because I need to replace my weatherstripping, but what do you mean by NOS? Is that a brand, or are you abbreviating new, old stock? Because that wouldn't make sense to me, old rubber is old rubber. While something in a box wouldn't have all of the UV and use damage, wouldn't it be just as brittle and weak?

Re: Best Vender for Weatherstrips

NOS= GM factory replacements

BUT the only thing about the NOS replacements is that they are made
of un-obtainium and real $pendy to boot !!!!!!

Not to mention they are gonna be 30+ year old rubber pieces just
like the pieces on your car and may suffer from the same issues
your having now.

Yes, NOS, New Old Stock..
There are a few reasons people buy/use NOS seals but the fit, finish and feel just can't be beat.
Even "old" seals in the box are still good unless they have been out of the box and laying in a window for 40years.
Infact, I have a few spare NOS seals for 3rdgens and also have all NOS seals for my 70 bird. They feel just like brand new seals do.

Wow, I'm surprised they held up like that. Thanks for sharing a first hand experience.

Re: Best Vender for Weatherstrips

I am also looking to replace all seals on my 87 t-top IROC. Currently I am trying to decide between buying the Metro or Soffseal brands. I have done a bunch of reading on here and there seems to be good and bad feedback on both products which isnt helping to make the decision any easier.

Metro seems to be a bit more inexpensive which is a plus. Soffseal has been suggested to me more by friends who have used both products on other types of vehicles.

Insight from fellow 3rd gen owners based on personal experience is very welcomed.

Re: Best Vender for Weatherstrips

I'll be installing the Metro sometime this week. Plan to bring her home Saturday, so sometime between now and then.

...will report back. FWIW, the hatch and door seals fit great.

Re: Best Vender for Weatherstrips

Well, I ordered the t-top Metro kit last night from RockAuto, along with the 4pc Fairchild window sweep kit. The Metro kit wasnt in stock so there will be a bit of waiting before I get my hands on those, but it needs to warm up before I can install them anyways. Still looking forward to hearing about your results @Abubaca.

My biggest fear is the channels for the t-top on my roof are rotten, along with the middle bar. Wont know for sure until I get in to it I guess. Fingers are crossed that everything in there is still useable. If not, hopefully the guy who was making/selling replacement roof channels is still offering them.

Hrm.... I thought the kit I got from 1A Auto was Soffseal. I'll have to check when I get home. I have a brand new kit that I need to install once I finish painting.

Well we went to move the car around the shop a little the other night and it wouldn't fire. Everything checks out. I'm kinda stumped. ....That has become a priority, but I'll reply whenever I do get around to that weatherstripping.

Re: Best Vender for Weatherstrips

UPDATE: ....weatherstripping is installed. Went pretty well. I will say it wasn't quite as "perfect" as original GM stuff, but it felt pretty good, looked like good quality and seemed to fit pretty well. I've found that this aftermarket stuff kinda needs to settle to fit just right. ...and true to form, these were a little puffy! LOL. REALLY had to cram those T tops in there. In fact, I had to loosen the mounting tabs on the passenger side because I felt I was overstressing the T top pins/mounting points. Not worried though. It'll settle, and I'll re tighten.

...the hatch weatherstripping hasn't even seen a nice hot day in the sun yet and it has already settled noticeably. -also Metro.

Re: Best Vender for Weatherstrips

I bought a weatherstrip kit from Steele and had a friend install it (competent body/paint person). He said it was a bit tricky. I think that's code for didn't fit so well.

It physically looks like it seals and the doors would barely close at first, but it actually leaks like a sieve around the windows. I don't dare get caught in a rain storm or the floor will get wet and I'll have to pull the carpet to dry everything. But my car is old and that's not the only place water is leaking in.
