Quick Question Regarding Bumpers and Trim

So I think at least some of us here can agree that the '91 and '92 GTAs had a much better looking and exotic body style than the previous years, at least I do anyways. If one were to track down both bumpers, the side trim and spoiler from one of the afformentioned years, would it all be a direct fit to an '87 GTA? (IE remove the old trim, spoiler and bumpers and bolt on the new set?) or would there be some modifications needed? If so what might they be?

Re: Quick Question Regarding Bumpers and Trim

The body panels themselves are the same (Doors/fenders) but the mounting holes for the GFX are different between 85-90 / 91-92. As for the bumpers and spoiler, I remember reading that a bit of modification has to be made but I'm not sure how much as I've never compared the 2. Only the GFX

IIRC, the headlights may be different as well.

I suppose different mounting holes makes sense, but that doesn't make it impossible. As for the bumpers, yeah. You probably have to change out that "padding" or whatever is that's behind the bumper to absorb impact as well. As for the spoiler, if I recall the older style spoilers were stuck on to metal "tabs". Depending on how the later ones mounted one may have to grind those down. So far though it's sounding like it may be somewhat difficult instead of "unbolt, remove, bolt the new shiny on) like I first thought.

You mean the foglights? I assume you probably just need different mounting brackets. I don't see how the actual headlight assemblies could be different since the bumper sits in front of them.

The headlight is different too, the 80's ones have "Pontiac" written and exposed along the front and the 91-92's have it in the corner of the painted top cover

Oh yeah, the badging is different, but I'm talking more about things that would cause the different trim to not fit.

Re: Quick Question Regarding Bumpers and Trim

Hi there,
The rear wing mount bolt holes are different, they need to be moved inboard a couple inches. But the metal tabs on the glass are the same. So you just need to modify the metal trunk lid.

Thanks for the info! Moving holes would be a lot easier than completely removing all of those tabs, that's for sure. For the most part, it sounds like moving holes is most of the work.

Re: Quick Question Regarding Bumpers and Trim

Front energy absorber (both the metal and rubber parts) are different too. This is because of the fog lights and turn signals.

I have seen just the 91-92' taillights and spoiler on an 85-90' T/A and that looks pretty nice. Not sure I would go through all of the work and expense to swap the bumpers/ground effects.
