Sometimes the belt..um...feeding device gets jammed, and it's a pain in the ***, indeed. I just got a flat head screwdriver in there, wiggled it a bit...eventually, it took up it's slack and snapped back into place. Good luck.

that probably isnt your problem

there was a recall about the same thing from gm, i have the same problem, dont bother talking to gm it wont work trust me. i felt around in the headliner and this blue thing that says do not remove was rolling around up there, it attaches to a shaft that spools the belt back into the roof, go to a trim and upholstery shop. i'm going next monday, i'l let you know how it goes

Acually, i believe the recall was for the piece where the belt clips into. The red pieces turn pink and brittle, and wont let the belt clip in... sure pisses off you passengers.

i think the original post was about how to repair it?

I have a 91 RS and someone powerhoused the seatbelt so they could buckle up but got it stuck in the process...

I removed the screw holding the speaker thingie up and took it off...
2. removed the plastic runner where the door comes to
3. pulled the plastic "shoehorn" that the belt goes through
4. removed the 2 bolts holding the belt spool assembly (not the technical term i realize) ...these 2 bolts had a chemical on it when install to prevent slippage and weathering to slip into the headliner...so it takes a bit of patience to get these out
5. moved the assembly from beneath the headliner/board and proceeded to work on it (you do need to be careful not to flex the board at all...i was in luck so nothing was damaged)
6. there is a nipple of a sort of the belt that prevents the belt from going back onto the spool..i tried to jimmy it back in with a screwdriver, as the assembly cant be taken apart without more headache than the job is worth..
7 my solution...cut that nipple of belt (actually its an embroidery of tight string to prevent the belt from being extended so far) away with a razor and allow the belt to get sucked up again
8. reinstall assembly/bolts/runner..

this took me an hour about...decent considering how i had to be crunched in the backseat for a good amount of time

REISSUE

Number: 85C23(A)

Section: 10

Date: July, 1986
Subject: PRODUCT SAFETY CAMPAIGN 85C23(A) FRONT SEAT BELT SHOULDER BELT RETRACTOR

Model and Year: 1983, 1984, 1985 CHEVROLET CAMARO MODELS
TO: ALL CHEVROLET DEALERS

# THIS BULLETIN IS BEING REISSUED TO SUPERSEDE PRODUCT CAMPAIGN BULLETIN 85C23 DATED APRIL, 1986. UPON RECEIPT OF THE REISSUED BULLETIN 85C23(A), DESTROY 85C23.

The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, as amended, provides that each vehicle which is subject to a recall campaign of this type must be adequately repaired within a reasonable time after the owner has tendered it for repair. A failure to adequately repair within 60 days after tender of a vehicle is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time.

If the condition is not adequately repaired within a reasonable time, the owners may be entitled to an identical or reasonably equivalent vehicle at no charge or to a refund of the purchase price less a reasonable allowance for depreciation.

To avoid having to provide these burdensome solutions, every effort must be made to promptly schedule an appointment with each owner and to repair their vehicle as soon as possible. As you will see in reading the attached copy of the letter which is being sent to owners, the owners are being instructed to contact the nearest Chevrolet Zone Office if their dealer does not remedy the condition within five days of the mutually agreed upon service date. If the condition is not remedied within a reasonable time, they are instructed on how to contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

DEFECT INVOLVED

General Motors has determined that a defect which relates to Motor Vehicle Safety exists in some 1983, 1984 and 1985 Chevrolet Camaro models. In some of these vehicles, dislocation of a spring cover in the shoulder belt retractor will allow the shoulder belt to be extended but will not

# Denotes Change
allow it to retract again. While the inertial feature that "locks" the shoulder belt in the event of an accident and the operation of the lap belt are not affected, if the amount of slack introduced in the shoulder belt is more than recommended in the owner's manual it is likely that the injuries to the upper body and head will be increased in the event of an accident.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

The involved vehicles are all 1983, 1984 and 1985 Chevrolet Camaro models within the following vehicle breakpoints:

PLANT YEAR FROM THROUGH

Norwood 1983 DN100001 DN185571
1984 EN100001 EN200729
1985 FN100001 FN142847

Van Nuys 1983 DL100001 DL168811
1984 EL100001 EL260862
1985 FL100001 FL452943

Involved vehicles have been identified by Vehicle Identification Number Computer Listings. Computer listings contain the complete Vehicle Identification Number, owner name and address data, and are furnished to the involved dealers with the campaign bulletin. Owner name and address data furnished will enable dealers to follow-up with owners involved in this campaign.

These listings may contain owner names and addresses obtained from State Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this listing to the follow-up necessary to complete this campaign. Any dealer not receiving a computer listing with the campaign bulletin was not shipped any involved vehicles.

OWNER NOTIFICATION

Owners will be notified of this campaign on their vehicles by Chevrolet Motor Division (see copy of Owner Letter included with this bulletin).

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicles or ownership, from this time forward.
Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used vehicle inventory, or it is in your dealership for service in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling or releasing the vehicle.

Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the dealer, and arrangements made to make the required modification according to instructions contained in this bulletin.

PARTS INFORMATION

Parts required to complete this modification are to be obtained from General Motors Warehousing and Distribution Division (GMWDD). To ensure that these parts will be obtained as soon as possible they should be ordered from GMWDD on a C.I.O. order with no special instruction code, but on an advise code (2).

CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

Each vehicle modified in accordance with the instructions outlined in this Product Campaign Bulletin will require a "Campaign Identification Label." (Notification Used By Chevrolet Motor Division)

Dear Chevrolet Owner:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Safety Act.

General Motors has determined that a defect which related to Motor Vehicle Safety exists in some 1983, 1984 and 1985 Chevrolet Camaro models. In some of these vehicles, dislocation of a spring cover in the shoulder belt retractor will allow the shoulder belt to be extended but will not allow it to retract again. Therefore, if your shoulder belt exhibits this condition and does not retract into the retractor, you should contact your dealer immediately so that repairs can be performed.

To prevent the possibility of this failure occurring in the future, please contact your Chevrolet Dealer on or after the date shown below, to arrange a service date to have two retaining springs installed on the spring cover of the front seat shoulder belt retractors. In addition, a functional check will be performed on each front seat belt retractor to determine that it is operating satisfactorily. When required, the front seat shoulder belt retractor(s) will be replaced. This service will be completed at no charge to you.

Instructions for performing this service have been sent to your Chevrolet Dealer. It is estimated that parts will be available April 16, 1986. The labor time to perform this modification on your vehicle is approximately one (1) hour. Please ask your dealer how much additional time will be needed to process your vehicle.

Your Chevrolet Dealer is best equipped to obtain parts and provide service to ensure your vehicle in corrected as promptly as possible. However, if you take your vehicle to your dealer on the agreed service date, and they do not remedy this condition on that date or within five days, we recommend you contact the nearest Chevrolet Zone Office, either in person or by telephone. The Zone Office will assist you and the dealer in getting your vehicle corrected. The locations and telephone numbers of the Zone offices are listed in your Owner's Manual.

After contacting your dealer and the Zone Office, if you are still not satisfied that we have done our best to remedy this condition without charge and within a reasonable time, you may wish to write the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 400 Seventh St., S.W., Washington D.C. 20590 or call 800-424-9393 (Washington, D.C. residents use 426-0123).

The enclosed owner reply card identifies your vehicle. Presentation of this card to your dealer will assist in making the necessary correction in the shortest possible time. If you have sold or traded your vehicle, please let us know by completing the postage paid owner reply card and returning it to us.

We are sorry to cause you this inconvenience; however, we have taken this action in the interest of your safety and continued satisfaction with our products.

Hey

I think... but im not sure, if my seatbelt is messed.
I have a feeling if something happens im gonna fly right threw the window

Like the belt always feels kinda loose... and you know how on some cars ive been in .. the slightest move and it stops me from moving (which is good) but is it the same way in the Camaro or not? im not sure and I wanna make sure im driving wiht a safe belt. Its not something you want to take a chance with becuase there is no airbag in my 88 Camaro. Should I get it checked out or not? My seatbelt buttons are still red. But I know it was really cold one night and the seatbelt was a real pain in the *** to clip in (passenger side) I dunno what it could of been?
Should I take it to a GM dealer and let them look at it? or what?
Thanks
