A definitive answer to the ongoing quest for the true 74U red paint color?

In the process of completely stripping my 87 IROC to the bare shell as part of her complete restoration (and upgrades).
She came from the factory with 74U paint RPO code. Referred to by several sources as "Dark Red Metallic", "Flame Red", and also "Victory Red".
There seems to be no concrete true ONE answer that I have been able to find.
It is generally agreed that it has the GM paint code WA8748.
Sometime before I got her in 1998, she had been repainted a "similar" maroon color (original paint is still on the door edges and engine bay). As part of the restoration, I want to get her repainted a fresh nice coat of her original color.
I also want to paint many small parts, and the engine bay with a fresh coat of the original color. This I will be doing myself, leaving the total body repaint to the professionals.
Do any of you have the true answer?
If so, what about a source to get the paint (spray) from?
Duplicolor has a similar/close color "Dark Toreador Red" that I have painted a few small parts with, but even though it is close, it just doesn't have that flame orange tint in the sun that the real color has.
Anyone that has info and can assist me, I would greatly appreciate it!
(Attached pics are not my IROC, but shows the color.)

GM has been using the paint code 74 for a long time with many different names.

Here's a 73 code 74 Dark Red

An automotive paint supply store should be able to mix you some spray paint with your car's color. Bring the paint code in and tell them the year.

I obtained some touch-up paint for my '86 from www.PaintScratch.com after some back-and forth concerning the color code.

Flame Red Metallic 74/W8748

If you are going to do spray bombs for the engine bay, I have heard you can get cans that mix in some hardener. I guess you have to use it all though once you start or it will go solid and won't spray anymore. I haven't used them personally, but I want to look into getting a couple of these in black for my car when the time comes.

Re: A definitive answer to the ongoing quest for the true 74U red paint color?

I noticed the 74U is different throughout the years and when I got my IROC painted I went to the best restoration shop around and was very particular about them getting the factory paint exactly right. I had a 10 page printout with pictures on where everything goes and how it should look. They didn’t paint the door jams and left all the factory decals alone so you can tell they got a perfect match... They even left the decal under the license plate that says “Do not operate trunk with tonneau open”

My paint code it 74U WA9535

I believe in 1987 the “WA” number was different. 88-89 it was a slightly more brick red color with more gold flake when the sun hits it hence “Flame Red” as opposed to 1987 Dark Red Metallic. They are close but I owned both cars and can tell the difference.

In 1991 and 1992 it’s a little more “Cranberry Red”

The guy that painted mine really nailed it. It looks correct in all the different lighting. It looks a little better quality than a factory paint job, but that’s fine. He did say it was more expensive than he thought to do that color and he should have charged me more...

The other issue was the “IROC-Z” bumper and rocker emblems needed to be saved because they don’t make good enough reproductions. He never had to save those before because they were so cheap, back in the day they’d rip them off and throw them out and get new ones from the dealer. The new paintable reproduction door moldings he was skeptical about from Hawks, but he said they were better than the factory ones and liked that they matched better when painted...

The top pics are original paint... I tried to find shots with similar lighting but it was hard...
