Best way to mask PONTIAC in rear bumper cover

Hey everyone, I've searched for a while on TGO and the interet in general, but haven't found anything really substantial to this question. I'm painting the rear PONTIAC logo on my 87 GTA gold, while the rest of the bumper will be black. Aside from painstakingly taping off the insides of the lettering, I had the idea of using Vaseline to cover the gold and paint the black over it, then wiping the petroleum jelly off, revealing the still gold lettering. Please tell me this will work? Of if it won't work, what the problems surrounding my thoughts would be. Here's what I have so far.

I’m not sure if it would be an after though or not but it looks like it might be easier to mask around the letter and spray the gold in last. At least that’s how I might go about it anyway.

Highlighting PONTIAC in the day and age will bring up the question, "what's a Pontiac?"

Right, I removed the rear bumper fill-ins on my '02 WS6 just for that reason. Kind of embarrassing nowadays, and I don't want to draw any more attention than I already am.

Re: Best way to mask PONTIAC in rear bumper cover

Ummmm...okay...

But that does not answer my question. The question was not "how can I get rid of the pontiac logo." Come on, guys...

First off, to remove the badging because the word PONTIAC embarasses you is, quite frankly, idiotic in my opinion. The car is what the car is. It's history now, since the Pontiac division went under. I'm quite proud to display it, and if anyone asks what a Pontiac is, then they are too young to even understand the heritage, and I'd be more than happy to have an open communcation with them about it.

Seriously, what's wrong with you?

It might come to that, but I am going to try the vaseline trick first, since I'm already there. If it doesn't go as I hope, the masking thing will come into play.

When I rebuild my engine, I wanted to keep the look of the brass freeze plugs. Just looks cleaner in my opinion. So before I painted it, I covered them in grease, and then after just wiped it out and it revealed the brass underneath.

Re: Best way to mask PONTIAC in rear bumper cover

my suggestion if you are using aerosol paint would be to mask the surrounding area like in the picture, paint it without wiping anything on it and then use a rag with a little lacquer thinner on it and wipe the area down while its still tacky. It will come right off. Test your surrounding paint elsewhere to make sure it doesn't wipe off too before you try this but that would be the easiest way. AS long as the rag isnt soaked super heavily it wont drip in and mess the surrounding area

This is what I am interested in, thank you very much for posting pics! I'm sure if it wipes off brass, it will wipe off the ABS plastic of the bumper.

I’ve heard of this method years ago and certain it will work, I just wonder how difficult it will be to get a clean paint line around all letters. Let us know if you try this and your results!

Keeping a straight line so you have nice edges to the letters, and not getting grease on surfaces you want the paint to stick to. I just can't imagine doing this without some sort of mask or stencil.

That silver/gray color looks great.
