overhead console mod

I just removed the plate for my three switches from a previous mod to make room for my new one. It has a clock/timer from a Sable and one switch from a Grand Am. The two other switches are from Radio Shack and are not my fav but its all they had in stock. Anybody else got any pics of a gutted console.

Those mileage rollers really suck!
Nice job once again, nosaint What particular method do you use to hold the panel in place behind there? I used a combination of hot glue, backstraps, and dum-dum for mine, but felt it could've been better. Just curious as to what you used

When i cut out the rollers i left the metal frame intact. The plate gets wedged on one side and then hot glued into place. Seems to hold just fine.

That checkered stuff in a carbon fibre vinyl tape.

I liked the appearance of the console with the prior switches better, but it looks like the new setup will be more functional. I think that it is that the clock looks bulky. No way to place it behind your fabbed panel with cutouts for the display and buttons?

Looks good man!

I wanted to do something like that to the console I installed into the RS but couldnt think of a really good way to do it, and still look stock... , I think that the "modified" look goes easier with the 'birds.... Now I've got to find a complete console for my Formula..... Anyone know anyone?

I admit its a little bulkier than the first one and Im not terribly crazy
about the look either. Your idea never crossed my mind, now that Im all
done I sure wish it did!

Oh well, maybe back to the drawing board.

Cool cause I've been thinking about installing one of these in that spot for about 2weeks! But I have also been thinking about getting a 4th gen console and mounting it there too.

Just the display and buttons of course.

It doesn't look that bad, but I agree that it would look better behind the piece with only the face and buttons showing..

That orange thing would be cool, what is it?
Remember that there is only a little over a inch of space back there.

Second, for those who have not seen the first one
Third, anybody know what color to add to green to make orange/red?

I am in the works to install a Outside temp gage and a digital compass like on the newer SUV's in mine. I have the parts, just need to manipulate and install them...

Nosaint,
about the ONLY thing that I could come up with for you no-saint is to get some plastic the color that you want it. eg, you want red, get some red plastic. Thats the best I can do. Matter of fact, since the compass/temp gage on my car are blue, I have to change it to amber as well, I will let you all know what I come up with.

What MIGHT actually be cheep & work is to go to an office place like Officemax, staples, Office Depot, etc, and buy some transparent red dividers, or folder covers, cut out what you want. throw away the rest.

John

Looks good man... I just gutted one of the 3 I have sittin around. I was wonderin where you got that carbon fiber nylon tape at??? I think using that would be a helluva lot easier than spraypainting anyway some pieces that i need to.

Thats what i had i mind, just some of that transparent colored stuff. Just not to good on my color mixing,

as for the carbon fibre stuff, any auto place or striping place should be able to sell u some. It covers all the imperfections very well and also helps to hold the stuff in if u make the holes to big.

It's called a Digital Doc 5. It's for computers and it monitors the voltages, fans speeds, temps and alot of other cool features. I wanna use it for my amps in my car. What you see in the pic is the whole unit that slides into a 5 1/4" drive bay. It has alot of cool features. Read about it here Digital Doc5 and here Overclockers

Got it from a Auto store in Canada. I quess that doesnt help you out. I been getting a lot of questions about this stuff. Maybe I should start selling it on the side!!

Its made by 3M and its pretty thick. I covered my console with it and it proved to be very durable

Yeah I've done a few things to mine to make it alittle more enjoyable I like Litestep too but my wife hates it so to make it easier on her I don't use it(she's not very computer literate and don't wanna be).lol So I settle for my Thirdgen.org Wallpaper I made. I watch The Screensavers, FreshGear(actually just Sumi Das), and Call For Help everyday and visit my favorite sites Betanews and Overclockers for some of the latest news and stuff. Right now I'm keeping my eye on the DDR333! I guess I'm one step away from being a geek.

Betanews started sucking when they decided they wanted to be a portal.

Then Anandtech.com, Slashdot.org, etc..

Yeah I completly agree HardOCP is much better and they have a great Forum. I use Betanews.com as just a glance and go kinda site. But for the real heavy stuff HardOCP is the best. I also go to TweakXP.com alot. Um back to the subject so I don't get nosaint's post locked and/or trash it. I haven't ordered the Digital Doc yet because I'm still in the planning stages figuring where to mount the fans in my amps and etc. But I think it will fit and if it don't I could also do alittle fiberglassing work to the Console to get it to fit. Or just stick it in my PC! I figured I'd use CAT5 cable to wire it up. But enough about me.
