Suggestions for undercoating/vibrational dampening paint

Hello everybody,

While I have my rear end and gas tank out, I want to paint everything underneath and maybe help with noise/vibration a little bit.

I'm seeing various reviews for products coming off easily and not applying properly.

I'm looking for some first hand accounts of products to use. The car will never see salt/snow, however it will likely be driven in the rain every now and then.

Perhaps the occasional drive through car wash.

Does anyone have a good product to be used for this? Ideally would want a spray paint type of deal, however I am more about quality than anything.

Thanks!

My current plan is to use POR15 on all the rusty bits underneath. It's a brush application style paint, but I have had great success with it in the past. Just brush / wire wheel off the scaly stuff and you can put it directly on rusty surfaces. Stops rust completely and can take a beating. Don't get it on your skin or you'll be wearing it for a couple weeks.

Brush style wouldn't be so bad, it's about $200 for a gallon of the rust preventative. Do you think this would be enough to do the bottom twice?

Also how many cans of the rubberized spray do you think I'd need if I wanted to double up for added protection + sound dampening? They sell 22oz cans at about $24.

I think a gallon of POR15 would be way too much; I did the entire floorpan of a beetle with not quite 2 of the 4oz cans. I like their 6 pack 4oz can deal because you can keep the paint fresh until you need to open another, and I think you'd have enough for an entire undercarriage with the 6 small cans, likely less than 4 and then you'll have 2 unopened cans for future projects. POR15 is a single coat kind of paint, it's thick but spreads out and you'll know when you've done enough.

I haven't used the aerosol undercoat, but based on previous experience with aerosol coverage if you wanted to do the whole underside of a car, I'm thinking you'll likely need 2 cans, maybe 3.

I agree with POR15. It is expensive but does a great job as far as rust prevention. Sound deadening not so much but you could use an under pad sound deadener under the carpet's if you really need to.

Well that certainly saves me some cash. Thanks for the tip on the 6 pack!

You might want to check out Zero Rust. I am using it currently on various items. Easier to use than POR15, easier to store, and much cheaper. Plus, it's not glossy.

Re: Suggestions for undercoating/vibrational dampening paint

I will check it out! Probably will be purchasing some time this upcoming week.

Thanks for the tip!

Do you think the aerosol would be sufficient, or do you think I'd still need to brush it on?

This is just my opinion, and everyone has one, but I think aerosol would be sufficient. Another paint I use is Rustoleum in aerosol---not the paint at Home Depot but I get the Hard Hat version from my local Fastenal. If you want the rubberized undercoating for extra protection, I like 3M undercoating in aerosol cans. The rubberized undercoating will be more difficult to keep clean and if it needs to be removed for some reason, will be more difficult and messy.

Hmm, I suppose I can take care of the vibrational aspect with the interior.

I plan on having sub frame connectors welded in pretty soon, wouldn't wanna give those guys too much trouble.
