Engine stalls after driving

I’ve got a 1991 Camaro RS 5L

Lately after driving a ways maybe on the freeway for ten or twenty miles say, when I get off it cuts out on me.

once on an exit ramp off the highway; once in a turnoff into a shopping center off a state route; today on a street after taking an exit off a freeway. I’m worried it’s gonna cut out on a highway or something and I’ll be screwed.

each time it won’t start immediately; sometimes it will crank but sometimes not, but can’t start immediately. I’ve gotten out and wiggled wires off the battery. All times its started back up within a few minutes. Few times it ran a little rough after that and then fine.

I’ve replaced all the wiring directly off the battery as it was all worn and previous owner did a bad job on it. I had hoped that would solve it but no such luck.

any pointers welcome.

I don't know if your ignition module is similar to mine. I have a 92 V6 and over the years (30 or so) I have had the ignition module go bad 3 times. It would shutdown the engine when the module would heat up. Let it cool a bit and then it would run again. However, you did say that sometimes it wouldn't crank. I never had that problem.

Thank you. The wouldn’t crank problem is I thought possibly related to a separate issue with the VATS.

ill check out ignition module. How long would you have to wait for it to cool down?

Re: Engine stalls after driving

Sometimes it would come back in a few minutes, other times it would take a few hours. Sometimes it would cut out for several seconds and then start right up (with that I would often get a backfire out of the cat converter since it would load up with fuel). I once had it die completely at the top of a mountain pass with no phone service. Since it is a sealed unit, I actually pulled it out and put it in an ice cold waterfall to try and cool it. But, it was dead for good. Mine being a manual trans I coasted down off the pass about 10 miles to a phone and called my brother to bring me a replacement. Just had to let the clutch out once in a while to keep power steering pressure. I put in the replacement and it started right up and away I went.
