Has anyone here installed door skins?

I know I asked this question awhile back. Unfortunately, the discussion kind of devolved into people telling me to get used door shells instead. I considered that option, but that is a lot more expensive. Also, since I already have original GM door skins, purchased many years ago from the dealer, I would like to use them if I can. The goal is making this car bondo/filler free. My original door skins would need a lot of work with body filler to make them straight again.

When I looked at the doors, it doesn’t seem that it would be too difficult to install new door skins. I watched a few videos of door skins being installed on an early F-body and it didn’t look that hard. Once you remove the seam sealer, you pull back the crimped on flange with a door skin peeler or a small chisel and hammer. Even easier, you can grind though the door skin panel edge with a grinder to release the skin from the door shell. I might go that route. Then, you have to grind out the 2-3 small welds on the inside of the door skin near the window sill. I think there are two or three small spots where it’s welded on in that area. After that, the door skin comes off the shell.

The tricky part is mounting the doors back on with the door skins semi attached so you can match up the body lines correctly by adjusting it. When it’s adjusted correctly, the doors come back off again and then the skins are fully crimped on permanently, re weld those spots again or apply 3M panel bond, and apply new seam sealer to the inside edge where the door skin overlaps the door shell. Doesn’t seem that hard of a job.

Has anyone here ever tackled this kind of job on their 3rd gen? If so, any comments or suggestions? Thanks….
