Any ideas?
Ok...my friend wants to install a T-top onto my car...hes a fellow 3rd gen freak...but he said with 150 bucks and a chainsaw we can do it ourselves....yeah....a chainsaw....that made me kinda worried...no im trying to decide if i want to go have it dont in a shop or let him at it...he said he did it to 2 of his past 3 cars...all third gens...83 TA, 85 Z28, and alother year IROC-Z. i dont know what to do, thought i might get some helpful info here...
Sounds pretty scarry to me. What brand of parts does he want to use. How exactly does he plan to install them? Any welding required? How about your headliner? Any endangered spotted owls living in your car
? I think I'd ask to see one or two of his previous chop jobs first, else make him put up the value of the car in cash, and if he screws it up or doesn't finish, the car is his.

DON'T LET HIM TOUCH YOUR CAR!!! any person serious about taking a chainsaw to a car is a moron!! anyway it wouldn't be wise to cut out the top of a hardtop, factory t-top cars had to have special bracing and such to maintain structural integrity... if you want t-tops that bad I would just suggest buying one...
cheers
I agree with you about the chainsaw and letting the guy touch the car. But I disagree with it necessarily being a bad idea to make a t-top out of a hardtop. There are lots of thirdgens here that are equipped with aftermarket tops, and none of us are having any problems with them that I have heard of. If anything I've heard that people have less problems with them than the factory tops. I still prefer the factory tops in my '86, but have to say that my C&C tops in my '88 appear to be better designed in the way they handle water.
However, if you don't have all the parts in hand, either new or out of a wrecked car, it would probably be easier and cheaper to buy a car that already has t-tops,

If you dont want to do the major job of the t-top, how about the next best thing and go with a good sun roof. A good local glass shop should be able to install it and give you a waranty. That way you know your covered with the install and the product.
I love my t-tops though except for the water leaking sometimes. I need to replace the weather striping.

i dunno...t-top or convertable...tough one i personally like t tops MUCH better but if its simpler, and all around better cost and effencity wise i guess i might go with the convertable...i dunno oh well ill think about um both
