I more or less stare at my tach the entire time im running until the shiftlite blinds me and tells me to shift. It actually comes in very handy at the track, but on the road it can become a bit of a nuisance. BTW, the "Autogage" version of the 5" monster tach is only 90 bucks, which i don't feel is a huge amount of money...

Well, since my speedometer doesn't work, all the time. Even when the speedometer worked, I looked at the tach more than the speedometer.

I don't usually look at mine, I shift by the sound of it, but if I'm racing or driving hard, I keep an eye on it.

Exactly. The stock one is fine. Maybe an aftermarket one closer to your line of vision. But 5" that big *** light. Do you know your car?

When just cruising, I'll look at my speedo constantly so I don't get a speeding ticket.
When I am either accelerating fast or racing, I'll be looking at my tach constantly.

I need to get shift light so I can focus on the road ahead instead of the tach.

well iam one of the ones who payed $200.00 for my monster tach with a shift lite and the reason most of us buy them is because #1 they are so much better then stock and yes most people can shift buy the sound of they're motor. but lets take a look at this #2 your sitting in your car at the x-mas tree staged and ready to go and your hauling *** down the 1/4 and your trying to hear your motor when the car your racing is running open headers. its kinda hard to hear your car over his. #3how many of you can tell the difference when your car is reving to 6000rpm and 6100rpm. not many people can do it and thats the reason for the huge shift lite. #4 we have no better to spend or money on. #5 we like the looks of it. #6 to make people like you guys ask ?'s #7 it helps us tune are cars better. and in drag racing you need every edge you can get.

so in my eyes you either like it or you dont thats it. For just people who keep their car on the street no i see no point in spending the money for one.

But for the people who drag race their cars know why we need them and thats all that matters. and if some of these guys on here would stop all the stuff about are cars being *****'s just cuz we have a 5' tach would stop and take a look back threw time and relize hot rodders had everything in their cars long before the ricers even came to be.

sorry its so long and i dont mean to flame anyone but come on guys if you dont know why we do it do knock us for it untill you try it. and the way i see no matter what you do to your camaro or bird it will never be rice because they will never look as ugly as ricers do.

opps i 4got one

#8 they are so much easyier to read then a 3' one. you dont have to look at the tach for 10 seconds to see where your rpms are at instead it takes 2 seconds at the most.

and its the same ? for you guys that run bigger rims why?

i know why BIGGER is BETTER!!!

:lala:

sorry i will shut up now :sillylol:

I like my stock tach, but I have no intentions of adding one of those 5" monster units to my car. My stock tach works just fine. I use my tach constantly. Even when just driving in traffic, I'm always watching my tach & other gauges.

Now thats what I was looking for. What you do and why. Good responses. I still dont need one myself, and I would never play with a silly automatic!

I have a nasty habit of always looking at my gauges...esp when i am driving a stick.....It will take a while to break that habbit even with a shift light....I hate it.

Car: too many ...
I have two 5" monster tachs sitting on my desk at home but in my camaro my tach is completely stock and I think its fine. I mean my car isn't really fast or anything so I dont see the need for an aftermarket tach. It will look cooler though when I swap in the 145 mph speedo with white face guages.

But anyway to answer your question, when I'm racing I dont watch my tach close enough to see a difference between 6000 rpm and 6100 rpm. Like you said I basically shift by the sound and way the car feels. I know its kinda lame to manual shift with an automatic but my tranny dosnt have a shiftkit so I do it anyway. I know this thread is prolly going to get into a shiftlight conversation (i remember the last one lol), but I'll just agree with the above post and say that if you're really into racing and every .001 second counts then it would make sense to have a bigger than normal, accurate tach (find the sweet shifting spot be it 6000 rpm or 61000 rpm) with a shiftlight so you can concentrate more on driving than watching the tach. But for me its not a big deal.

Oh and I want to put 18" wheels so I can run lower profile tires, mainly so when cornering there is less flex in the wheel and it handles better. Its not really about the Bigger is Better thing, there is a valid reason for wanting bigger wheels.

88_RS&86_Z-28 you said it!! You also took all my reasons you greedy bastard!!

I would never play with a silly automatic!
silly automatic??? Do you know how gay that sounded ? Most professional drag racers use "silly automatics".

As for how often I look at my tach....all the damn time. I don't know about you guys but I drive my car hard!! Having a bigger tach just aids in seeing exactly whats going on. When I'm drag racing I almost never take my eyes off the tach (only to see if i'm still going in a straight line).

you know i wish everyone would stop wondering why we (drag racers) do the things we do to our cars.

ok quick breakdown

we put slicks for traction, we tube rear ends for more tire (more tire more bite)

we put 5' tachs in so we can be better

we put roll cages in cuz its the rules if your fast enough and to help save our lives if we crash

we strip the inside to loose weight

we run autos cuz they are more consist and that wins

we build huge motors cuz they run quicker

we race on the strip cuz its legal ( and iam sorry but i like having a DL)

we install air shifters cuz belive it or not when you have 600 ft. lbs of torque its kinda hard to keep controll of a car with one hand on the wheel and one on the shifter.

now yet again if you dont drag race then stop giving us ****.

end of story.

and sorry No4NJunk i will try and save some for you next time

cuz iam sure this will get asked again
