How rare are my door panels?

In all the years I have had my car, I have only seen 1 other bird with Identical door panels, it was burgandy. All the others I have seen have had a map pocket at the bottom.

Please discount the red modifications. Obviously I added those, including the speakers. I'm just trying to see how many others have these doors. This is not an opinion poll about what you think of my doors either.

Oh, if you have pics of panels the same style and color of mine could you post them?

Thanks!

They aren't custom nor are they rare. I have them in my 89 GTA, I had them in my 88 GTA and they are a normal door for the 88-92 GTA. Sorry but the only custom thing about your panels are the speakers and the "looks like" power window switch. Still the nicest door panel available for our cars! (opinion)

I know I asked before but are your headlights a kit, or if not, what brand are they?

I agree my 89 GTA has the same panels. The speakers are the only thing different.

Hey guys,
I know these doors came w/ the deluxe interior package. Do yours have the map pocket at the bottom? Cause mine never did.

I added teh speakers and aftermarket door locks/power windows. My car was all mechanical.

I know they are not custom. I have seen them in the 88-92 GTAs, but they all have had the map pocket where my speaker is. I just what to know if it was a fluke, mine either not having the map pocket &/or them being in a base model bird.

The headlight conversion I hand made. The physical lights are Pilot Simulated HID driving lights. Advance carries them. I have more details on how I did it on my site. Page 11.

Yes mine do have the pockets. If you want to know if yours are factory, look where the Vinyl meets the fabric, is the fabric overlaid on the vinyl or is the vinyl pressed onto the fabric?

Factory doors, the vinyl is pressed and glued into the fabric and panel itself! The only real way to remove the map pocket and not have an impression left in its place would be to recover the fabric area after the pocket is removed. This would leave you with the fabric on vinyl in a custom application.

To answer your original question correctly, I have never seen (excluding yours, if it is factory) a third gen with these panels without the pocket!

Thanks for the info on the lights!

Mine do not have pockets. However there is a possiblity someone removed them. I question this also because I have never seen ones without pockets and the guy I bought the car from said he had them redone 4 or 5 years ago. I too took them off and I am having them dyed black.(currently tan) I have not been able to find a black set even though I know they are not rare. The 2 sets of black ones I found where both beat. I have never seen these door panels on a base firebird. I have seen them on trans ams and formulas.

Both of my GTA's had them, both with pockets, but another GTA I was looking at didnt have them. It turns out, theyre another option. I believe they were available without the pocket in 87 only.

I have had my 87 since 1989. The door panels were never recovered. It came like that from the factory. The fabric and the vinyl are fused together.

The burgandy car was an 87 GTA, and it did not have the pockets and there were no marks indicating they been recovered or had pockets removed.

If you want my pockets, I am going to remove them. I don't really think you do, just thought I would ask. By the way, you must have allot of extra time on your hands! Jeeze woman, you have put a ton of effort in that car! Now for the 383 and T56! Keep it up!

No duh, those are the molded door panels, I'm not a total idiot dispite what you think. But the molded door panels dont' have those speakers in them, thats why they are custom.

I just picked up a set of those panels in very good condition at the junkyard yesterday, from an '89 (I think) base model Firebird. They do have map pockets.

I thought they were pretty cool looking, but I don't think I want to lose the cupholders on my '92 Formula's panels, so I will probably sell these on eBay or something.

What I also noticed was that the car I took these out of had manual locks, and on the door panel is a little blockoff plate where the lock switch would be.....so the panels could still easily be installed in a power-locking car.

Also, it would seem to me that it would be nearly impossible to fit these panels to a car without power windows.

That might explain why mine are w/o the pockets. I had the manuel window crank which would more than likely not clear the pocket.

Anyone have a pic of a sliver/gray set stock w/o the map pocket?

No don't want the pockets. Thanks though.

Its not that I have alot of extra time really. I just go in spurts. I have always been into art, drawing mostly. Lately the direction of my art has switched to the car. A bit of self-expressionism I guess.

The engine upgrade is the next project. I hope I don't get in over my head.

I've got those door panels in my 87 TA. No map pockets.

lasersi,
What are the map pockets you are looking to get rid of? hard plastic with the cupholders, or are they soft and leathery (that doesn't sound quite right together) like pocket on the dash?

What color is your interior? If its grey do you have any pics of the panels? I really need some before shots. Could you send me some or post them?
Thanks

Oh man what a bear. That was the biggest pain in the butt.

After alot of trial and error it came down to a few steps.
Drop the tank and cut off the filler neck.

Cut a hole in the fender well on the inside of the car. I wanted to route the filler neck up thru the fender well and access it thru the cargo box. I had taken out my box long ago and put my cd Changer in there.

Put the tank back in and tried to reroute the filler neck with a flexible metal pipe to the hole. We got a shop to weld the upper part of the filler neck back on to the new flexible piece we added, but it messed up the filler hole. The little metal flap does not close right. Well it still could not make the turn, so we then had to put in a rubber piece. Still we got it to work temporarily.

As far as filling the hole. My boyfriend’s dad cut a piece of sheet metal just a shade smaller than the hole and welded it little by little. You have to go slow or you heat up the surrounding metal and it will warp. After the piece it welded in. You grind down any high spots. He used some fiberglass filler (bondo hair) then sanded. Then on to a very light coat of bondo. Then primed it and sanded, primed, sanded. Then we took it to a body man to finish it up and paint the section.

We will see if I pass emissions next week. I'm still using the factory filler so the gas cap is stock. It should be ok. We have an aftermarket recessed filler, but I need the emissions tech to clear it first.

They are gray cord material, just like the material on the door already. If you are interested let me know?

Did you install "factory ones" or some type of aftermarket product for the locks/windows?

That's my sumer project I hope while the interior is being redone.

I got a VPA power window and lock kit from JC Whitney. I had to mod the kit a bit, but it works great. Windows are a bit slow, but at least I don't have to crank them anymore.
