Spohn Big Brake Kit question
Does anyone know if the kit will fit under the Ronal Firehawk rims?

which of his kits are you looking at? the 1le or the wilwood?
chances are it will fit, but i cannot confirm that, i have heard that the ronals don't have as much room under them as most of the other 17" wheels do, but i would image they have as much room as the iroc wheels do. but once again, you would have to get measurements of both the ronals, and irocs, to confirm if they will fit.

My friend has the Baer Track front and rear brakes on his 82 with teh Ronals. I think his rotors are 12" up front, not sure of the rear, but they are smaller than 12".

I already have a set of firehawk rims on my car, I'm just looking into what my options are for aftermarket brake setups that will fit under them.

i doubt anyone has test fit them with those wheels, i would find a iroc wheels, which we all know works with them, and compare them.

Does anyone know how far out the 4 piston caliper sticks out from the rim mounting surface of the rotor? This would help me figure out if they will in fact clear the rim.

There was a post about this a few months ago - I believe the 13" Baer 2 pot will not fit the hawk rims but the 12" 2 pot Baer set up will fit.
I think the 13" 4 pot wilwood set up that Spohn sells will fit the hawk rims because they are open at the top of the caliper for cooling.

I'm not worried about diameter clearance with the firehawk rims. I'm worried about clearance with the backside of the spokes hitting the caliper.

Someone said Spohn confirmed by email that his Wilwood kit will fit the Ronals. If I go that route I'll just call up Spohn's tech dept. and find out for sure.
With respect to the C5s and Ronals, there was some mention in an old post about the caliper not clearing the back of the spokes. Obviously have to follow up on that one.
I think the C5s would be more than enough for what I do even if there's some tapering. I just run at lap days so it's not being raced really hard - out for 20 minutes at a time usually - although I'd prefer to have more brakes than I need.

the wilwood kit will fit. Ive got the firehawk wheels on my car and the inside diameter is larger than that of the stock z-28 wheels. If they fit the stock wheels, theyll fit the firehawks.

So I'm going to say no, it won't fit those wheels because of the center section spacing. You can fit a floating caliper in there with 13" rotors but the wilwood 4 pots are too thick. They SHOULD fit the 91-92 RS/z28 wheels, look at their center section offset and it should be clear why.
You might be able to fit LS1 rotors (12") with the wilwoods.
If you could take a picture of the inside of the rim I could probably tell you.
I have c5 12.75" rotors sitting here with wilwoods but they don't fit under my current wheels
. Bracket is all made and everything is just waiting new wheels and spacers. Supreme Member

Yeah, that looks too tight. I hate giving up on the large brakes for the appearance of my wheels but my tires were too new and I still like that my wheels were a limited production just like the Ronals.
There is plenty of room for the caliper and rotor if you get a custom hats made for a 2-piece rotor setup. This of course would require a different mounting bracket.

I ended up using the 1LE kit from Spohn, which fit great and allowed me to toss the front spacers on the ronal rims. For the rear I went with the bear rear disc brake kit. All I can say is my car stops nothing like it used too.

Re: Spohn Big Brake Kit question
Ed,
Thanks for the reply. I've sent you a couple of PMs the last couple of months, but I know you are busy.
What kits do you do that fit the Ronals? Will the Wilwood setup that fits behind the GTA crosslace wheels work? I saw the setup that Gordon received a couple of weeks ago and want a brake upgrade myself but want one that will fit under a set of future Ronals.
Thanks,
Robert

Spohn no longer offers this kit. AFAIK, I'm the only one.

Re: Spohn Big Brake Kit question
The Ronals Firehawks WILL clear ed miller 13 inch willwood kit. The wheels marked front WILL CLEAR the ones marked rear require about an 1/8 inch spacer.
I know because that is what I run. I do not know about the spohn kit.
