Just for kicks (rotor picture)
I had the pleasure of changing this rotor after the owner said her brakes were 'making noise.'
At this stage, the piston was out of the bore, and it leaked all the fluid out....

My late little brother (ingenious as he was) took just such a rotor, painted it black, painted the tips of the fins gold, installed a $3.95 movement in it, and made it into a clock. People who saw it hanging on his living room wall actually wanted to buy one like it, until he handed it to them and they discovered it weighed about 6 pounds.

Wouldn't metal to metal like that sound like a diesel locomotive out your window all the time? I would think the molten caliper dripping on the road would clue her in?
How long does one drive before the rotors look like this?
Ron

good question, ron.
on one of our trucks at work, they let the brakes go past 36,000 miles. the front end was actually making a grinding noise, then it stopped.
it ended up eating an abs sensor. they only sent the truck in for repairs when the wires in the weatherpack connector going to the coil worked loose, and killed power to the coil.

Strangely enough, the outside surface looked good. There was still plenty of pad left there too. But if your wheel stops getting covered with black 'pad dust' and starts collecting orange 'iron dust,' then you are probably eating a rotor.
