Re: New brake goodes

I just wanted to let you know that the CMX pads that NAPA sells ARE NOT perfomance pads. I work for NAPA and remmber when the pads came out. There was a little blurb about there being ultra low dusting and low noise (designed to vibrater at higher frequency). This was later brought home when one of the taxi companies and the Leon Valley police complaned of short life and fading (police). A better choice would be the AE or if real hard on the brakes SD (Sever Duty). Not meaning to rain on your parade.

Buy Stillen pads, You'll thank me later. Hawks are so-so. Stillens are designed for maximum street use without compromising any noise problems at all, and are very rotor friendly. They will not groove the rotors because the material is softer than the rotor, very low dust. I ran down in a pinch a few weeks back and Stillen was temp out of my front truck barke pads (I have run them on this truck for years) so I opted to try out some of these famous "Performance Friction Pads" that everyone around here raves about. The frikin truck doesn't stop with them- they are terrible. I ran down last week to pick up a couple more sets of Stillen pads to have on hand- They last me about 1 year on this heavy vehicle that I carry very heavy loads in always (so believe me, I know about brake fade.)

Just so you know, When looking for any 1LE pad, the GM configuration is D412. Non-1LE pads are configuration D154.

You'll want Stillen Part # D412HD

Don't know about shims. I have never owned a 1LE setup. (Have driven many with though.)

Please do everyone a favor- After breaking them in poperly(give them a little time just like any pad) get on them and test em hard for fade, dust, pedal feel, initial bite

and please then give imput. I think everyone needs to hear another opinion on them other than myself.

As long as the rotors are seasoned (have been heat cycled and ran with any other pad aready) They will seat easily within 100 miles.

If the rotors are still new, worry about breaking them in before worrying about the time it takes to seat the pads. (More like 500miles of heat ups and cooldown trips- not one continual 500 mile drive.)

One thing I do to any pad I get (If not already done) is grind the leading edge to a 45* to reduce or eliminate noise and to smooth out the initial bite of the pad even more for predictability. Doesn't have to be pefect 45*, just do quickly by hand with a grinder.

The Stillen pads I run on my truck rears do. I run Munstang SVO calipers back there and Linclon rotors.

The smaller d154 Stillen pads I have bought many times over the years for the stocl Camaro iron calipers don't. I just quicly tapper them myself.

Its not a big issue to do this yourself. Reason why alot won't come pretappered is because it takes away surface volume of the pad contact patch onto the rotor. they leve it to the owners decression as to what they want to do to them. These are about the max friction level pad you'd want to run for everyday street use. Any race pad WILL make noise when used on lower everyday street temps. These are marginal, so aplications will, some won't. Rears generally make more noise than fronts because they induce lighter pressure. Pad noise of this type is only from light pedal pressure. If they aren't tappered, a sander with 60grit paper will do it even.
