LS1 rear brakes.. should I go for them
Hey guys,
I just came across a relatively cheap set of rear brakes from LS1 car. My rear end is from 96 car.
Should I buy these, or wait till I find LT1 set?
I did some searching and there are various opinions. Some said new holes (8 total) need to be drilled and then I found 88IROCARMY's thread that said they will bolt on to the housing if you use LS1 backing plates.
Sme people staying away from them, and others said they converted and could be happier. So those that converted, what is actually involved in this?

If you have the backing plates, rotors, calipers, then you are good to go.
If you have a drum rear, then I have no idea what is involved since I never messed with drums.
If I remember correctly, LS1 and LT1 backing plates are different and don't interchange due to the different style of e-brakes.

cool, they are sold with everything including the backing plates.
So then the only question is that e-brake bracket that has to be fabbed. Does anyone have a picture of it preferably off and on the car?

No, the bracket that connects the hand-brake-lever cable to the two cables that go to each drum in the back. I have to get some new brake cables cuz my uncle threw out the first set I got, and then I have to make a custom bracket.

Don, I give you full credit for trying to help but that is the smallest picture of any bracket I've ever seen.
Otherwise, I am not sure what bracket I am talking about. I just read several ebmiller's posts where he mentioned some bracket for e-brake needs to be fabricated making LS1 brake install more complicated than LT1 brake install. Now I just want to find out what exactly needs to be done.

I believe the axles have to be changed when going from LS1 rears to LT1 rears. Something about different lengths do to the different parking brake setup. Minor difference, but it does cause problems. Check some 4th gen sites to verify.

not true.
i just followed the tech article on mine. somebody told me the stock ebrake cables from a late disc model thirdgen will fit if the end is enlarged a little bit to fit the ls1 lever. i bought some, but the opposite end is different from the y cable thats on my car, and ive been too lazy to find the right one

i had the stock drum rear, reused the axles, just cut and drilled the housing end accordingly and bolted everything up. i did have the parking brake hooked up, but it was ghetto (involving some braided cable using wire clamps) and it did work, but it was def unsafe so i took it off

I think theres a bigger picture posted somewhere of that bracket. Do a search for LS1 brakes and Dyno Don.

I then drilled through the cable connection block (center hole) to a large enough hole so the factory threaded cable end fit through it. I cut off shorter the factory cable and reinstalled the nut onto it.... whaa-laa- Clean and simple.
