No Back Brakes!!!!
N
Hey 3rd gen members,
i had a question about a brake problem........i am a 19 yr old pontiac nut and so is my dad. i have a 1987 pontiac formula 350 tpi with disk brakes all around. I went to get my emmisions test and the back brakes would not stop the rollers and i failed that time. I told my dad and he said thats how the factory brake are set up so only 5% of the brakes are from the back brakes....i dont think thats the way there set up. I tried bleeding the brakes and also changed the calipers with a set from autozone. This did not help at all....rear brakes still suck....i also heard many thing about my year pontiac rear brakes "Freeze" but can find a way to fix them. Also heard it has something to do with the E-Brake. Any advise would help alot. thanx

Yep, that's the way they are from the factory. This thread contains a fix for them:

There is also a recall kit that can be fit to the rear calipers. Problem with that is that replacement calipers don't alway's have it either (as per the auotzones you received). May have to do with the cost, the kits aren't cheap. A search here should bring something up on it.

{edit: a few more good threads with additional information and alternatives:

If you can't stop the rears on the drum because you have no rear brakes at all, it's not a proportioning valve issue so don't worry about that yet. Try the recall kit first:
