Weird hybrid axle?

I was just checking the oil level in my rear axle, and I definitely have the 9 bolt carrier, with the pseudo-octagonal rear cover. Then I took a good look at my axle flanges, and they are the same tall flanges that are found on the 10 bolt axles. Did the Borg 9 bolt axles with drums have the same flange as the 10 bolts, and the short flanges only when equipped with disc brakes?

Thanks, James, figured that must be it. Finally got my wheels, now I just have to figure out what's needed with the hydraulics.
