Are rear LS1 brakes really all that much better than stock 91 disks?
Well the title says it all. I am getting C5 front brakes real soon, and am wondering if it is worth going through the trouble to get LS1 rears to mount to my Moser 12 bolt. I just don't wanna have to pull the axles and all that crap if it isn't really worth it. Take into account it that the stock rears would have nice drilled and washed rotors and high perf. pads.
Thanks for any insight.

considering the rotors are larger thats a plus right there, the calipers are mounted in front of the rotor thats much better stopping power.
have you looked at a Porsche the car is small and the rotors are HUGE for the size of car.
i would definately do the Ls1 brakes out back, inexpensive upgrade

yeah, i just am really turned off by the fact I would have to pull my axle tubes, get the backing plates/bearing pressed off for $40, then mount everything up, then pay another $40 to have it all pressed back on, then reinstall the axle tubes. I mean the front brakes do about 85% of the real braking for the car, so the C5s will be doing most of the work. Maybe I will do one summer just C5s and the next summer I will do the LS1 rear stuff. By then I think Eb will have figured out how to make the rear C5s work with a parking break. Thanks for the suggestion.
I do love the look of porche brakes. very big in a little car. Too bad the car is the price of 1/2 a house. haha.

Dennis, you have a 9 bolt rear right? If so, the LS1s have a cast backing plate drilled/cast for 10 bolt flanges. I'm not sure if LS1s will work for a 9 bolt without doing mods that I personally wouldn't recommend.
Caliper mounting, front or rear, should have no effect on braking performance. They do have a slightly larger rotor but as in all brake setups, the fronts do about 80-85% of the braking so concentrate your efforts there and have the rears working properly so that they compliment the front setup.

Right on. I will stick with stock rears for now. I don't have a 9 bolt, but I have 9 bolt backing plates on my Moser 12 bolt. Eb, I need to contact you about getting my front rotors tuned into hubs. Also I would like to know how much it would cost me to have you mod my spindles. I hear it is easy, so I might do it myself, but I am curious.
Thanks

the backs do help. i couldn't get me 97 lt to stop even with new pads, rotors, bleed line. then swiched the front to ls, better but not much. Swiched the rears to ls and holy sheep sh**, it throw an anchor out, that swap was so worth the effort, time and money

Hmm, you don't have to press the bearings off to get the backing plate of, the hole in the backing plate just slide right over the bearing and seal. Unless your seals are bad, or you have to mess with the retainer plate, then thats a different story.

There is 100% no way to get the backing plates off a Moser 12 bolt without getting the bearings unpressed. Unless you cut a 3" slot in the plate so that it will slide over the axle tube. There are threads started about this and I called Moser and asked them. The bearings are HUGE ford bearings.
