Rear drum to disc

At the local JY there is a IROC that has rear discs and my RS has drums. My car is an 89 and the IROC is an 86 IIRC. What would I need to pull off the brake assembly to make the conversion later on? Besides the calipers and discs what should I pull?

Re: Rear drum to disc

your going to need a master cylinder in the front off the booster that supports 4 disk brakes instead of two i believe, you can't use the splitter in the back like the drums can. Other than that entire rear axle and you may want to check that '86s RPO codes, it may have an aluminum driveshaft if you were interested.

Re: Rear drum to disc

I was wondering about the master cylinder. I have read a little but never found anything like me where you find the parts but only need the essentail parts for the swap, when reading I read something about all I had to do is change the proportioning vavle for the rear brakes since the brakes operate differently. I figured that I just needed the bolts and brackets as the real big items, BTW I don't want to have to do any custom work on the axel I have, this would just be a weekend swap.

Re: Rear drum to disc

Yea i understand, i'm just saying i didn't know if you might be interested in possibly getting an alluminum driveshaft if that donor car had one. Yea it would be a direct swap, but as far as i know you need to swap the proportioning valve for the four disk master cylinder attatched to the booster. I'm sure if i'm wrong someone will jump on and help out. Good luck!

I might grab the aluminum DS if I have the money. Thanks for the help though.

Re: Rear drum to disc

An 86 IROC won't have an alum drive shaft. Your master cylinder will work. Personally, I'd grab the combo valve and the e-brake cables from the donor. The hard lines will come with the rear end. Direct swap.

Re: Rear drum to disc

I'm not pulling the rearend out of that IROC. I was just going to pull the essential parts off of it. I will buy the parts that wear out later on next year. I just wanted to know what is needed to be pulled from the car to do the swap.

Re: Rear drum to disc

Don't do it dude...... Take it from someone who's had a few different cars with those rear disc brakes. They suck when they're working, and they don't work very often.
If you gotta go to rear discs, stay with the 90-92 pbr's. I'd much rather have drums than the early discs.

Re: Rear drum to disc

Well in my case as a camaro drifter....drums actually grab firmer than our discs...or at least the pre 90-92 PBR's.

I was looking for rear disc conversion until I found that out, now im just looking for the aluminum drums and replacing the band and springs in it whenever I can.

Well good luck on the swap if you go through with it.
