Painting calipers
Just want peoples opinion about caliper colors.
I have an 87 GTA color code 74U (victory red) burgandy and Oasis Iroc rims.
Would red, black, stock or custom matching to the exterior look best?
By custom I would spray a matching color then spray on some VHT heat paint clear coat.
Any suggestions?

Black or silver. Both could pass for stock, but look good to those who know better.

Yes, but for those of us who wanna show 'em off, black and silver are no fun!
LOTS of performance cars, regardless of paint color, use red calipers. That'd be my choice.

Re: Painting calipers
Is there any prep work that has to be done before painting the calipers on then make sure they are perfectly clean? How would I go about cleaning them... brake cleaner? What if that doesn't remove anything? And for paint... just use a high temp paint? Is clear coat needed on calipers? Do I have to take out the piston and seals and what not or could I just tape them off?

Re: Painting calipers
I bought new rear calipers i justed use a paint prep to clean them and a rag and taped them off. The front ones i power washed and wire wheeled cleaned then used paint prep and rags. and wiped till the rags no longer picked up contaminants. the paint i used soaked into the iron/steel so it took a few coats but after it dried it doesn't look like its coming off and i plan to change the color i just hope i can get most of it off but i might even bother since i plan on doing a whole brake system upgrade sometime.

Re: Painting calipers
POR-15 makes a nice caliper painting kit that you can get in various colors as well. That stuff holds up really good too.

Re: Painting calipers
I wasn't happy with the dupli color boxed kit for $17. Paint was very thin. Might as well have gotten the dupli color rattle can for $6. I taped off the business end of mine and sand blasted them. You can't see the piston, bleeder, line areas when installed anyway. Silver calipers and the surrounding abutement brackets yellow. Everybody does red.
If you use a custom color and high temp clear, isn't the color paint still going to cook?

Re: Painting calipers
The Dupli-Color kits are just repackaged rattle cans, essentially. I've used the POR-15 caliper painting kit on a customers Monte Carlo, and the results were fantastic. Expensive? Yup. But most good stuff doesn't come cheap. I think their color choices are silver, red, black, blue, and yellow. While I was looking through my catolog, the price for their stuff is $39.50. Like I said, a little on the pricey side to paint four calipers, but the end result will not disappoint.

Re: Painting calipers
The color is really a matter of personal opinion.
I matched the paintable rotor surfaces to the
basic car color (red), and then an accent color for the
calipers (gold). I also use the gold accent for intake
manifold, serp brackets, and master cyl.
As far as material, DEFINITELY use a quality product
capable of withstanding brake component temps.
POR-15 is excellent, but pricey. Eastwood products
are also good, as well as cheaper, and easier to apply.
Good luck, and post some pictures of the finish.

Re: Painting calipers
I use Dupli-Color engine paint on mine. I just refinished mine yesterday in 1200 degree aluminum and the caliper brackets in gloss black for an upcoming show.

Re: Painting calipers
VHT caliper paint as a base then use the top coat from the Metal Cast paints and it holds up and looks really good. I have used the metal cast paints on engines and they can hold up to brake temps and never dull if done right.
