What should I grab from the JY car?

I found a 2001 Camaro in a local pick'n pull that obviously has the LS1 brakes. All the rotors are junk and the pads are cracked, but the calipers don't have much corrosion on them and their carriers aren't rusty. I already grabbed the front calipers (seals look good but piston needs to be replaced) and brake lines, but what else should I grab. Specifically, what should I grab from the back of the car? Just the calipers or the backing plates and drum parking brakes too? Unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to get under the car far enough to grab the parking brake cables because it is stacked on top of a thirdgen.

Is there anything else I should grab like the master cylinder, or isn't it worth the effort to get the master cylinder? Quick answers are greatly appreciated so I can get the parts before someone else does.

Thanks,
Mike

if your taking brakes, grab the master cylinder. Take the complete rear setup, backing plates parking brake and calipers. You can swap them to another axle without much work. Dont worry about the cables, they dont work on a 3rd gen.

They work just fine on mine. I'm using the entire LS1 setup for the rear, including the bracket in the tunnel, all 3 cables and e-brake handle. E-brake will lock the back wheels at the 3rd or 4th click at 30mph.

Re: What should I grab from the JY car?

I can only get at the bottom of the car if they move five other cars and leave the fourthgen on the forklift so I can get under it. I doubt they would be willing to do that.

The outside of the master cylinder still looks clean and isn't stained yellow, but the cap wasn't on it so the fluid is probably really dirty. Should I still grab it anyway? Would it be hard to clean it out? Is there any advantage with the fourth gen MC as opposed to the third gen MC? Could I just grab the upper plastic part and leave the lower metal part? Would the upper portion then line up with the thirdgen lower portion?

Thanks,
Mike

Re: What should I grab from the JY car?

The brake handle, front cable and the bracket in the tunnel are the same on all 4th gen cars (or so I'm told). I pulled mine from a '95 bird, obviously non-LS1, but all three pieces worked great. Rear cables need to be LS1 and the brackets that go on the lower control arms need to be LS1 - at least thats's the way it works for me.

The 4th gen handle and front cable are needed because the tension adjustment (which is done automatically) is in the handle, and the cable is different 3rd to 4th gen.

Master cylinders are different, but bolt right up. There may be a difference in fitting sizes to your hard lines (not thread size, but depth into master cylinder). 4th gen reservoir will not fit 3rd gen master or vice-versa. I bought one new from NAPA for a 2002 Camaro SS and it works great. I also ditched the stock proportioning valve and went with an adjustable one on the rear line.
