LT1 rears

LT1 rears

I want to put a rear from a LT1 Trans Am in my Camaro, but I didn't get any brakes with the rear. My Q is: Are the calipers and all the brackets the same between the later third gen 10-bolt disc rears and the LT1 disc rears? Is the only difference between these two disc brake setups the rotors?

That's sort of a confusing one. I would go with LT1 calipers and brackets, just to be on the safe side with it fitting.

To add to possible options, note that 89-92 PBR's (1LE) are virtually the same as the 93-97 version (LT1). Ed Miller sells the 10-bolt backing plate for that set-up. He also sells an LS1 conversion kit, which doesn't seem to have a lot in common with earlier brakes:

Calipers are essentially the same from '89-97, backing plates and rotors are different from '89-92 and '93-97. If in doubt use all '93-97 parts on that rear and you'll be fine.

I want to be able to buy whichever calipers I can find used, because I cant afford to buy new calipers, ($180 each at Napa!!!!!)

Ed, I looked at your website and it looks like you would have everything I would need for this swap? Could I get everything I need for the swap, except for calipers and rotors, from you? Basically, lines, caliper brackets, backing plates, and any other misc. parts?

Edit: BTW, I won't be using a parking brake.

Edit again: Will I have any trouble fitting my stock 15" wheels? Same as these: http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/pts/1387953746.html

I was in the same dillema a few years ago, then i realized the solution. I found a Borg Warner 7.75" Heavy Duty 9 Bolt posi, disc brake rear end out of a 89' 1LE IROC-Z. It has the exact same rear brake setup used up to 1998 Camaros. 11.65" vented discs, with PBR aluminum calipers. I only paid $250 for mine, & it came with crossdrilled rotors. I turned them, and they were still good. I rebuilt the calipers and new timken wheel bearings. and it was ready to go. Plus this rear differential is MUCH stronger than the 10 bolts. It was supposedly stronger than a Dana 44. They discontinued it due to being too expensive. The brakes are excellent!! Plus now my car stop like crazy. Much faster never any fade. If you can find one of these rear ends somewhere i would most definitely buy it. They are will worth the money. They were put in all 350 camaros/firebirds from 88-92.

The brake set-up between an 89 and 98 would be considerably different--calipers, backing plates, e-brake, perhaps rotor size. Also, while members agree that the 9-bolt is somewhat stronger, "much" stronger may be an overstatement. Finally, the 9-bolt was installed in some cars from 85-90 (I've also heard 89)

, and, I already have a 3.42/posi LT1 10-bolt, so I might as well use that, but, 89 RS, if I found a 9-bolt for as cheap you did, I wouldn't hesitate to get it.

yes i know the 98 and up brakes are different. they use tthe better internal drum e-brake. Thats why i said up to 97. Also those 7.625" 10 bolts are garbage, the limited slips are weak. Ask anyone who has done anything serious to thier car, the 10 bolt is replaced immediately. Lastly the BW HD 7 3/4" 4 pinion 9 bolt rear end was only used from 86-90 on camaros/firebirds with the G92 pkg. Either L98 350/700R4, or LB9 TPI 305/ T5 5 spd. cars. This rear end is much better b/c A. it is a 4 pinion unit, B. it has a much better cone type clutch, C. much larger 33 spline axles, D. tapered roller bearing, rather than straight. Everything it has is for strength/abuse. plus the pbr alum calipers are covered in fins, for increased cooling. Unilke the later model 4th gen calipers.

i just went through the same problem last weekend i drilled new holes in the backing plate then put it all back together with the ebrake and all its really easy but i had the 9 bolt rear and switched to a 10 bolt from a 96 lt1

I'm not aware that a 33-spline axle was ever used in a 9-bolt; 28 seems to be the standard.

my bad they are 31 spline axles. i counted splines. Well mine did come out of a 89 1LE Camaro Racecar. So maybe its been modified. It also came with Cross-drilled rotors on it as well.
