I have an 85 Z28 that is giving me the worst trouble. At the moment i'm trying to replace the wheel cylinders. No matter how hard I try, I just can't get that stupid clip on the back of it. Is there a special tool of some sort? Any tricks? Suggestions? ism't there a way I can replace them with the ones you bolt into the back of instead of the clip??

 

They sure are a pain to get back on. Couple of things can help. Using a c-clamp and a large socket works. The socket is used on the clip with the clamp over it and the wheel cylinder.

Can also wedge a block of wood between the axle flange and the wheel cylinder. Then use a hammer and a punch to seat the clip. Or a socket or a piece of pipe to seat it.

I did just this and had no difficulty getting the clip back on after cleaning one wheel cylinder and replacing the other. Use a piece of wood between the wheel cylinder and the axle flange to keep the cylinder from coming back out then work the socket around in sort of a circular motion to get the clip down in place and whack it with an object of your choice to secure it.

 

Thanks for the advice. I have had more problems with the brakes on this car then anything else.

i just replaced one yesterday.i used the socket with a c clamp.what a stupid design.the old design with two bolts was much easier.i look forward to swapping in discs.

 

I managed to get the cylinder on. I ended up using a hammer and punch. I would like to swap to disc. But I've heard it is fairly exspensive.....

 

are our wheel cylinders metric or standard?

 

the way i do it is i remove the backing plate from the axle flange.because ,like you i couldnt get that clip on for nothin!! i then rotate it clockwise,you then can easily get at it and put the clip on
