9 bolt disc brakes?

Hey guys, I'm shopping for new brake parts (rotors and pads) for the 9 bolt rear end I picked up for my car. I'm shopping online for 88 firebird parts (mines a 91 but I was told my axle came off of an 88 G92 formula), and I'm just afraid to order the wrong parts. Is there a difference between 9 and 10 bolt disc brake components? The only note rock auto has on their website is whether they're 1LE parts or not.

The brackets are different. You need to know if it's 1Le or not. What diameter are the rotors and are the calipers both behind the axle or is one in front and the other behind? The code would be a guide but only looking is for sure.

Re: 9 bolt disc brakes?

I'm pretty certain it's not a 1LE axle. And yeah I have one caliper facing the front and the other faces the back.

I'm only trying to buy the pads and rotors anyway, calipers seem reusable.

Based on what you've said, buy for an 82-88 and you'll be good to go.

Re: 9 bolt disc brakes?

The ones you've got are Delco Moraine "iron caliper" with 10.5" discs. The 1Le are aluminum calipers with 11.6" discs.

Yes, the 89-92 J65 brakes, the so-called 1LE's (or performance package) were equipped with alum PBR calipers mounted on the back side and 11.7" rotors.

Re: 9 bolt disc brakes?

Ah I see, so seeing that I DON'T have aluminum calipers, there's no chance that my rear end is any newer than 1988 correct? Because I was told that 88 was that rear's approximate year when I bought it; the seller wasn't 100% sure.

Where did you get your conversion kit? Specifically the brackets. My 9 bolt has the funny looking front and rear cast iron calipers, and i want badly to do this while I have the rear out of the car already

Flynbye.com is one place. Components or the whole kit. The kit is expensive but it's complete and shiny.
