Hydroboost Swap - With Pics!
Hydroboost Swap - With Pics!
Going off of a couple threads on here I was able to do the Hydroboost swap with great success. I had tons of spare -6AN line and a nice size cooler laying around so I decided to try the swap. Even though space is limited and my booster cleared the turbo headers Im still glad I did the swap.
I bought a used hydroboost unit off of ebay, I believe it was a 96-2001 Safari GMC unit but mine came with the angled bracket which obviously doesnt work. I took a piece of 1/4" aluminum and made my own bracket to mimic the old bracket just as a flat piece. I threaded the rod end just as others have and it worked great. The only advise I can give is that if your running a cooler make sure you bleed the system VERY well before you try to use it. Otherwise fluid will come rushing out of the power steering fill cap when you turn the car off.
If anyone needs more pictures of anything let me know.

Re: Hydroboost Swap - With Pics!
could be wrong, but i didnt think that AN line you have there was rated for more than 250psi or so? doesnt hydroboost work on much higher line pressure than that?
Re: Hydroboost Swap - With Pics!
The lines I'm using are the Earls Auto-Flex hose & fittings. Its supposed to be rated to 1500psi, which still isn't enough in theory. I did a lot of reading however and it seems like a lot of people use the braided hoses with success, only time will tell. Having replaced two stock high pressure hoses in the past I'm not exactly impressed by those either.

Is that strut mount on the correct way? Looks like it should be rotated 90 degrees so caster is fixed and camber can be adjusted and set with the 4 bolts.

bvahnee,
Please replace that hose with power steering hose and fittings. Fittings will be steel. The hose frequently but not always has a blue braided cover. I do not understand why you have chosen to run hose that you know is not rated for the pressure.
Finally isn't a y splitter recommended off the pump?

My thoughts exactly.

I have my application routed to a central remote reservoir with one large feed going back to the pump housing.
You guys are correct, that hose will never hold- it is very dangerous. Line needs to be high end teflon lined hose made for hydraulic type fluids. I even run the good stuff on my low pressure return lines just for the heck of it.

Thats right. The return circuit normally has the y.

Don't want to jack the thread but the mount is bugging me. It looks like once the mount is locked in place then the 4 small bolts can be loosened to move the strut but the way it is now it will adjust the caster. Otherwise you need to loosen the 3 main mount bolts making the other adjustment more or less redundant. ????

Some braided hose can be rated to 2500 psi, so it depends what you get. Hydratech braking sells hydroboost kits with aeroquip teflon line that is rated to 2500 and swears by it. I am giving it a shot

Re: Hydroboost Swap - With Pics!
The line I have isnt made for power steering (I dont think, even though summit seems to say it is) so I went ahead and ordered some of that fancy blue power steering line. The only good thing about ordering new line is that I didnt actually pay for the -6 line anyways.
Thanks for the advise guys, I wish someone wouldve mentioned this in the other hydro boost threads.

Re: Hydroboost Swap - With Pics!
Its deleting requirement for vacuum so its nice on big cammed cars trying to run power brakes. Its smaller too so can fit turbo headers and downpipes in that area better
My question is how does your brake pedal feel with this setup? Mine feels weird but not convinced the system is all the way bled out yet.
My pedal has a good bit of take up that doesnt feel like its doing anything then hits load, it depresses abit with strong leg input but then pedal kicks back as it approaches botttom of travel. It feels like the brake range is very narrrow on pedal and i have the pedal rod backed out fairly far. I havent driven it yet just getting car running
