I know your not going to want to hear this but that sounds fair to me. 6 months is a long time. I am not sure your local part house will go that long.

I'm also amazed they would give you 6 months to return parts, that's longer that most dealers would allow. I think the purchaser has some responsibility in a transaction to check the items bought and make any claims in a reasonable time.

Re: rockauto - 6 months and 3 days
I have spend several $k with RockAuto (before they raised their shipping rates). I have NEVER had an issue with them after speaking with them.. I get the frustration of not being able to return the core, but 6 months???
I had purchased an axle for my Mustang from them. I received the wrong part. They spend 2-3 hours with me on the phone looking for the correct axle. In the end, they did not have it. They paid the repacking and shipping both ways. I cant think of ANY other company that would've done that...

Rules are set for a reason. Policies are made and need to be enforced or else why have them? 6 months is a long time. Sorry the job took longer than expected but deadlines are deadlines. You just missed it. Can always try to sell the calipers for someone else to use as cores
