ebrake not working

Barely passed inspection without a parking brake. Just bought it. There is no resistance when I pull on the handle. Just goes straight up. Is this a snapped cable?

Re: ebrake not working

Update your profile with more info about your vehicle. Check your rear brakes. Could be worn discs/pads or out of tolerance rotors/drums as well. Get the rear end up and see what the brakes do when you pull the hand brake.

Re: ebrake not working

Use the diagrams attached and see if you can find a disconnection somewhere. Should be all mechanical. Good luck,

Re: ebrake not working

So... went to pull my ebrake during parking the other day and pretty much heard the cable snap... from the first look, it looks like the cable snapped at the lever, my question is, how do i know exactly if its the front, or rear R or L? and is there a special procedure on the replacement? i have drums in the back... 88 iroc

The parking brake is just the REAR, no vehicle has and parking brake mechanism on the front axle. You have to pull it apart to see if its the left or right cable

Re: ebrake not working

The e brake is a fairly simple mechanism. The handle connects to a single cable that has a flat bar 1/4 thick by 1/2 wide by 6" long. The cables that connect to the calipers connect here, it's above the drive shaft. If the cables are good it could be the tension mechanism inside the car attached to the handle. There is a spring that keeps tension on it. If the spring is broken or disconnect then there would be no tension.
