Stock front brakes.

Hello all i have an 86 camaro and im looking to see if anyone has pictures of the stock front brake setup. Specifically the caliper and caliper bracket. The previous owner replaced the stock setup with an aftermarket set and i think its actually causing issues. So i have the stock calipers and rotors but i think im missing the bracket. Please assist. Thanks.

And yes i did try some googling and forum search first but i couldnt find what i was looking for.

Thanks!

Re: Stock front brakes.

This is the passenger side Caliper Mounting Bracket. Its the only photo I have of it.
The last photo is of the drivers side caliper mounted to its bracket.

If the caliper mounting ears have been cut off of the steering-knuckle/spindle, will require new ones. Only the 1LE 3rd gen brakes have a separate mounting bracket for the calipers.

Otherwise the caliper mounts are integral to the steering-knuckle/spindle.

Re: Stock front brakes.

I did do the brake job myself and it seemed to me that the caliper mounting bracket was held on by the two large nuts in the photo. Is that right. Do you just have to remove them and replace the mounts or is there more two it ?

Re: Stock front brakes.

Ok so i have decided to try a salvage yard. Can anyone tell me the tools ill need? I hate to go up there with a big tool kit. Would rather just carry what i need. Thanks in advance!

Ohh and i do have the mounting holes (threaded) on the knuckle/spindle so i think ill be good with just the mounting plates.

Ok i just re-read that and now im not sure what to think... Grrr....

Re: Stock front brakes.

post up some pics of what you have: it's possible that the "aftermarket" brakes you have could be the later 1LE setup that uses 12" rotors and Corvette calipers..

what is the problem that you are having with it?

Re: Stock front brakes.

Sorry guys been out of state and still am out of state. I cant get a pic right now but i can tell you whats going on.

So in the front i have willwood 4 piston calipers with lightweight rotors (the willwood upgrade kit) It mounts to what i am pretty sure is the stock holes for the bracket however the brakes are crap...

At first i thought it was because the back was not working at all however after spending hours and a couple hundred dollars to get the back in good working order (Rotors and pads, not drum BTW) they still are not that great.

Its strange tho, i can hear the front brakes sounding like they are working hard, same kind of sound i hear from my Cadillac with upgraded brembos and ceramic pads when i brake hard, but it just does not want to stop.

Its so bad i have to really slam them in the wet to lock them up. The booster seems to be holding vacuum but i have not check that proportioning valve at all. I kinda know how it works but not really.

Im starting to wonder if the booster/master cylinder is enough to push these 4 piston willwoods. Just not sure whats going on here.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Stock front brakes.

i think the Wilwood site has a calculator on it to tell you how big of a master cylinder you need for the different calipers. it sounds backwards, but the better multi piston calipers need a smaller master cylinder to work properly- they need more pressure whereas the stock single pistons need more volume.
might also be a bad choice of pads, or maybe the pads are glazed: pull them off and hit them with some 60 grit sandpaper on a regular orbital sander to get rid of the smooth surface and get to fresh friction material, then do the same with the rotors and try bedding the pads in again.
