84 Brake System Question
84 Brake System Question
Ok so I have a 1984 Trans Am... Its 4 wheel Disc Brakes..
I replaced the master cylinder a few years ago and the one for the 1984 wouldn't fit the lines in the car.. so I got the one for a 1983 and it fit fine..
I'm looking to replace all the lines in the car this year and I want to just order one of the pre-bent line kits but I'm not sure if I should be getting the 82/83 kit or the 84/85 kit. Anyone know what size the lines/bolts are in the 84 trans ams?
Thanks

Re: 84 Brake System Question
The change between SAE and metric took place somewhere in that time frame. I'd suggest your 84 is still SAE.

Re: 84 Brake System Question
So its more than likely the same brake line sizes as 82/83. 84 seems to be a weird year, some things are 84-86 and some things are 82-83. Its as if it were a transition year for many parts.

Re: 84 Brake System Question
84 is coming up as a metric thread, and 82 SAE, So, looks like somehow even though you have an 84 the thread size says no

Re: 84 Brake System Question
I've seen reports that some combination valves as late as 85, for example, are still SAE. Whatever was left in the parts bin maybe.

Re: 84 Brake System Question
My '84 Z28 had metric thread. I have also heard of some '84s having SAE however.
Re: 84 Brake System Question
82 and 83 were sae 100%... 84 was half/half I believe.. if the nuts are colored blue or red then it was metric, std sae was silver/gold. You can also use sae wrenches or metric wrenchs to check the line nuts to see what fits. If you get to the point where you take one off, the metric has a bubble flare, the sae has a double flare that is inverted

Re: 84 Brake System Question
Easiest way to tell, the metric prop valves areachined from a block of material, and are very angular with sharp bends and edges. The sae valves are cast and are much more rounded and smooth

Re: 84 Brake System Question
Unless I'm mistaken, all of the metric blocks are aluminum, which is probably the biggest give-away.
