Swapping out "Self-Adjusting" parking brake handle
Hello,
I am trying to swap out my '90 firebird's self-adjusting parking brake lever for the 82-89 version that doesn't self adjust. I noticed that the parking brake warning light switch is different between the two styles, and the tab for the connector does not fit my car's wiring harness. Does anyone know where I can get the correct connector? Any others issues I might come across with this swap? Picture of the difference (82-89 style on the left):
Re: Swapping out "Self-Adjusting" parking brake handle
It’s a one wire switch. Just solder a wire to it. I didn’t think there was any difference between the e-brake levers. All the self adjusting from the early POS rear discs was done internal to the caliper.
Re: Swapping out "Self-Adjusting" parking brake handle
The early design uses a threaded rod to tension the yoke under the car. The later design has a ratcheting setup, that uses a spring to pull the cable tight when the lever is down, and a locking pawl to lock the adjustment as the lever is pulled.
The connector for the early switch might be available from Mouser or another Delphi/Aptiv vendor, but I'd probably just file or grind the tab on the early switch to fit the later connector and call it good.

Yep,
Grab a file and get to work. Either that or get one from a junk yard

The cables are not compatible either. IIRC lengths differ, later type is shorter, early design has a threaded end, later uses a equalizer bracket. When i swapped mine, i just used the older switch and mounted it where it work work with the newer e-brk, but i went the opposite direction to the later style.
