Transmission problems/questions

My 700r4 in my 92 RS (305) has been hesitating when shifting to 3rd for a while now, recently i drained about a quart of fluid and replaced it with some thicker hoping to fix the shifting problem, and the next day the trans completely stopped shifting into 3rd at all. So now 1st and 2nd gear is all it will do, and 2 of the 3 mechanics I talked to says it’s one of the sensors on the side of the trans. However I think it’s a much bigger problem though I’d like to hear everyone’s thoughts on it. Also, if it do have to replace trans, should I go with 700r4 or 350 turbo trans ?

Re: Transmission problems/questions

Wrong forum, but stick with an OD. A 700R4 can be built. The 4L60E is the electronic controlled version of the 700R4. In 92, I am pretty sure you have a detent cable and I don't think any sensors should keep you from going into 3rd or OD, just TC Lock Up. Take this with a grain of salt, I have never done serious work on a 92.

4L60E and a 350 turbo trans are the same thing ? I Have absolutely no transmission experience at all. But I’m going to check the cable next step, can you help me out and explain how to do that? And yes, I think so too, the problem I have seems to severe to be a shift solenoid.

In lineage, yes. That is the evolution line. TH400 became the 4L80E. They are not exactly the same, please don't get that impression. a TH350 and TH400 do not have overdrives. The 700R4/4L60E/4L80E does. Also the E transmission are controlled by the computer. The older ones are not.

Sounds like you're confusing the TH350 with the TH700.

TH350 has little in common with any GM transmission other than the TH400, while a TH700 is nearly identical to the 4L60E other than it not being computer controlled.

Pretty much, but the 400 was a HD Transmission and the 350 was the Medium Duty. Th 700 is considered a medium duty as well.

700R4 / 4L60 / 4L60E / 4L65E / 4L70E same family
Super Turbine 400 / THM400 / THM375 / 3L80 / 3L80HD Same Family

a 4L80E is a HD Trans with an OD, computer controlled.

No that we got some nomenclature out of the way, first make sure the cable is attached to the throttle body or carb depending on which engine you have.

Then:
