1988 IROC 5 spd hardtop

I've wanted an IROC since I was like 4 years old, and I can afford a second car now, so I want to make it happen.

The IROC I want must be an '88, hardtop, and factory 5 spd. These are just some things I'm set on. I will wait however long it takes to find one. I also want one with zero rust. I live in IL in the salt belt, but I'm willing to fly anywhere in the country to bring the right car home.

So those are the main points. Other criteria aren't nearly as important, but the perfect car would have:
- 4-wheel disc brakes (RPO code: J65)
- Performance rear axle (RPO code: G80)
- Limited slip differential (RPO code: G92)
- External oil cooler (RPO code: KC4)

I don't want a pile of junk, but I do intend the car to be a project, so it doesn't need to be in perfect shape at all.

EDIT: I've decided to go a different direction and am no longer looking (unless you offer me a deal too good to pass up).

Not to pry or be a dick but why JUST an 88? 89 was basically the same car. Same dash and options and had a bit more power stock as well. You could find the same stuff you want in an 89 as well. Im just trying to expand your search criteria so you can still find what you want.

No worries, it's a valid question. I'm set on an 88 just because it's something my dad and I always talked about doing, working on a project car from the year I was born. So yes, an 89 would be basically the same thing, but I'd just prefer an 88.

Wait for exactly what you want. Right down to the color and options. Its out there. Believe me! I have compromised in the past and always regretted it. I hope you find exactly what your looking for. When I decided to buy one of these I found exactly what I was looking for in just a couple months. Wow you were born in 88 when I graduated from high school. Man I feel old.

Re: 1988 IROC 5 spd hardtop

Not sure what other options this one has, but so far it fits the bill, and its IL.

http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/cto/4181307052.html

I like seeing these cars get restored/restomodded, tastefully, so i hope it works out.

I have seen this particular one up on CList for a while, so not sure how flexible that price is.....

Being an IROC it should have the limited slip, (my 87 T5 came with 3.08 posi and drums) rear disks would be a toss up, and worst case you can add the oil cooler, i have seen the setups on craigs and here-

Thanks for the post. I've looked at that one a couple times, but the it looks kinda rusty on the wheel arches, and that scares me away. Rust is the one thing I don't think I'm capable of repairing.

Re: 1988 IROC 5 spd hardtop

yeah, i saw that too, might just be body damage, not necessarily rust. I figured it was worth passing along.

just FYI- I bought my 87 in milwaukee, originally 305tpi t5 ttop car, and its only rust was the battery tray. and I mean ONLY rust. it was originally a west coast Oregon car. So its out there. Just be dilligent.

I have dealt with rust before too, its not fun at all.

Yes, it definitely is. It's been listed on Autotrader for several weeks and I've exchanged emails with the owner. It's just out of my price range, unfortunately.

There's two others on Craigslist that I'm trying to work out deals for right now.
